I finally bit the bullet and tackled changing the HID bulbs in the Q. Jeez.. anyhow, I noticed the ballast in the 02,3,4 were a lightly colored galvanize steel box with yellow stickers but mine were not.. Mine were a dark grey and said they were made by Matsushita?? Is this what you guys have in any of your 02,03,04 Q's? Just wondered if they switched it up with the ballast due to failures, or is mi e the same and just been lucky? I've got 95,000 miles and all of it was original, the bulbs, ballast.... And I only replaced the bulbs for the difference in color temperature. I waited 2 weeks for some PIAA 6600k made in Japan bulbs. Pretty cool they make a size D2U which will fit D2S or D2R. Anyways, Matsushita in all the F50's?

It wouldn't surprise me to see rolling vendor changes for things like ballasts. The ones I took off of an '02 F50 were Stanley.

Looking at listings on ebay, there appear to be a couple of different styles though.

So do we know what brand they used that was prone to failure? I see that is one of the issues surrounding F50's. I was looking under the hood of a 2003 at the junkyard and a couple of electronics were different as well. My throttle body is Hitachi and the other Denso.. how did Nissan have any continuity or control over quality?
I would like to know what brand ballasts were prone to the failures..

I don't know if we have a large enough sample size to say... the F50 was a fairly small run. Off the top of my head, I'd lean toward the earlier ones being more failure-prone, but that could be biased due to the age of the cars, and the fact that production numbers decreased year by year during the run of the car. I think they only sold about 1100 of them in 2005.
