Formula 1 teams will be allowed to use hybrid engines in 2009 to increase power. Currently, they have a ower restriction as they don't use superchargers or turbos. I guess F1 is going green.

Interesting. Racing is the ultimate stop and go driving. You're either full on the throttle or full on the brakes.

If the minimum weight limit stays the same, they will have to lighten the rest of the car to make up for the batteries.

It will be necessary to limit the boost from the batteries so that they last the entire race. Regenerative braking will help although there may be a physical limit to how many amps can be pushed back into the batteries.

If you flog a street hybrid, you will quickly run down its batteries. Regenerative braking is only partially effective. Light braking is entirely regenerative. Heavy braking requires the friction brakes, too, and that energy is lost.

With the massive yearly budgets the top teams get....I'm sure they'll figure something out that works haha.

Well said! The minimum weight issue was also discussed as well. Hybrid technology was the only way F1 allowed for an increase in power. Lets see how they make this happen. Sooner or later, the hybrid technology in F1 will make it to street cars.
