Hello everybody. Does anybody have this problem with extremely dusty front rims that do not completely get cleaned no matter what you do?I have this problem with 2005 G35x. I tried cleaning them with very hot water, various chemicals that are designed to clean rims but there seem to be dirt spots that just do not want to go away. Is anybody familiar with this and knows how to solve this problem? Thanks.

Welcome aboard!

Ah, yes. The notorious G35 front brake dust.

Part of the price you pay for having a sedan that stops shorter than a 'vette is soft pads and a lot of dust.

No more chemicals - Simple soapy water should do the trick. If the brake dust has settled for TOO long, it may have started to eat into the finish of the wheels (it's corrosive).

Any chance you can take a couple close-up pics (after they're washed)?

We should be able to help better if we see the nature of the "spots".

Yes! You might be right about dirt eating into the finish. After a few trials and failures to get and keep the dust off, I, in a way gave up on it. I hope it's not too late to save it! I certainly will take a picture. Thank you, I appreciate the response. :

You may want to try bug and tar remover for the really tough stains...I use aluminium cleaner for my rims...but they're the 19" Rays on the coupe....not sure if the G35x has aluminium...

The wheels should be clearcoated. Try a mild paint polish on them. You might try a claybar as well. And once you're done getting it off, put a good coat of wax to protect the finish.

There it is. I captured the parts that do not get out with hot water.

If all else fails, have a company that repairs and refinishes wheels take a look and make suggestions. If bad enough, they may need to be refinished.

Try some rubbing compound. If that works, clean the wheels and put a nice coat of wax on them, inside and out. It will make cleaning them so much easier in the future.

I have the same problem with my stock Brembo brakes on my '03. I clean them every week starting with my electric pressure washer. I would imagine the clay bar would do a great job, but havn't picked up any quite yet.

As far as the wax goes, does that stuff actually hold up? I've always been told was is pretty worthless in southern climates and combined with the spinning wheel and big hot disc brakes I would think it would slide off before you get on the highway.

I'm considering having my stock 18's chromed. I figured they'd be much easier to keep clean and other than the additional weight, it would look great!

I was thinking the same... switch to chromes. But having the stocks chromed, now that is even more interesting because I do like my stocks. How much would that cost? And who does it? Would the price of chroming be in the ball park of just buying a set of chrome wheels?

Yes, waxing your wheels works. It is no different than waxing your car. They are painted and clear coated. I can literally take a rag after a couple days and just wipe my wheels off and the dust comes right off.

Good pics - that helps.

Mike's right: Rubbing compound (gentle), buff, wash, and wax (I like WheelWax).

The dealership where I bought my car had an '06 on the showroom with pricing for all the aftermarket stuff.

They had factory 19's on them, but they were chrome. They sent them out to a 3rd party and were charging $320 for the chrome ($80 per wheel). It noted that Infiniti doesn't sell chrome wheels and it must be done by somebody else. I would assume since the 19" tire and wheel upgrade was $2000, having your wheels chromed is probably quite a bit less than the price they had quoted on that car.

Thank you, everybody for your suggestions, I liked the idea of waxing, if it really works as described - it's great. What exactly does waxing the car do? If the paint of a car has these lines (not scratched, but very soft lines that are very visible on the sun, I think they appear after wiping the car with a cloth) would they be gone after waxing?

"Wax" is kind of an outdated product.

We have a great detailing writeup here (can't recall who wrote it, but it's excellent)...

Those fine scratches are exactly that - pros call them "swirls", as they're very fine scratches in the clear coat. Can be caused by wiping the car without water - Dust is very abrasive.

They can be removed by polishing.

My regimen:

Wash with Dawn and waterClay barWash againRinse real wellPolish (good quality compound like 3M)Zaino (2 or 3 applications)

This allows me to simply RINSE the car off, lasts about a year or so if garaged.

The strangest things that ever happened to my car happened today.... I was driving, listening to music, suddenly I notice that the screen (picture shown below) had frozen! Apparently it froze on 1st CD, 1st song at a certain second of playing, and that's what would appear on the screen, I couldn't press any of those buttons on the photo, none of them would do anything, they just weren't working! The only thing I could do, was switch songs, change volume and power off/on from the wheel controlers. I tried shutting the egnition off and starting it again, the problem persisted. When I drove home, shut the egnition off for a minute, turned on, everything seemed fine as if nothing happened. But I'm thinking, if it happened once, it might happen again. Any thought on this strange occurance?
