Extreme Shifter play - ideas?

I just put in my "new" 20$ manual transmission. It shifts just fine, but there is an extreme amount of play in the shifter. I can basically make a 4-5 inch circle in *any* gear, be it neutral, 1st, 2nd, etc. Any ideas what'll fix this? Perhaps a short shifter?

the bushing that the shifter uses as a pivot is going out on you. short shifter will definitely fix the problem, but so will a new bushing and spring.

Is this attached to the shifter or is this inside the transmission?

it's inside the transmission. it's the yellow/white circle that had the two metal sticks poking out of it. You could push it down because of the spring below it. When that gets old, it gets a bit mushy and allows for the shifter to sway around without interrupting the current gear setting.

a new bushing will stiffen it back up, but not completely. a short throw shifter should have no play whatsoever
