I dont know if the topic been talked about but................................ I'm shopping around for a external wastegate (since i have a upgraded turbo) and i was wondering what is the spring rating for? I've seen .5 bar .6bar and all of that, which I already know is a boost rating. Do you have to get the spring rating according to how much boost you will be running?

Spring will be the minimum boost you can run, after that, a $15 boost controller can increase it.

the spring rating is just for the minimum boost you can run if you have a boost controller.

lets say you get a .6 bar WG spring (like 8ish psi). that just means you can never run LESS than 8psi. with a boost controller you can go higher. just never below that .6 bar.

Yes the spring you choose needs to support the amount of boost your running. If the spring is to light your wastegate will not be able to hold the desired boost

O ok, so when i put it on it wont effect me running stock boost then, since stock boost is 10 psi.

Thank you everybody for your replies

What Bluefire is saying is that you should get a spring somewhere near what boost you want to run, and then it will be the minimum you can run. For example, if you have a 10 psi spring, you can probably run 15 psi with a boost controller. But don't even think about doing 20 psi, because the spring is too weak to hold the gate closed even if the boost controller tries to keep it closed. If you think you might be running 20 psi, then you should probably get a spring for at least 15 psi. Then 15 psi would be your minimum boost, but the spring would still hold at 20 psi with a boost controller.

odd you say that because i have a buddy with a hks gate on his ka-t with a spring rated at 1 bar and he cranks the boost to 25 on the dyno and when at the strip and has no problems.you may experience a bit of boost creep doing this but you can up boost substantialy before it becomes a problem.ive a 1 bar spring in my hks gate and it works very well, main reason being is that anything lower than 14psi on my turbo is straight up retarded because its not even on the compressor map.

I guess next question will be, what spring rating do you all think i should get? I'm eventually going to up the boost, when i get some bigger injectors im going to install the F Con V that i got and get it tuned. So i kinda want something that i can play with the boost a little bit here and there, but something that's also going to last me up to the point where i will be getting it tuned and running more boost.
