Yeah theres an external filter, its located near the battery, you can see it if you look by the battery...

It may be easier to convert it to an aftermarket filter setup that uses screw on oil filters, especially long term. Summit racing sells them.

What year did Infiniti start using that filter?

94 but some 90-93s have the external filter. If the trans on a 90-93 (VERY COMMON on 90-92s) was ever replaced under warranty they got an external filter, however the 94 external filter is slightly different because it has a 2 in 1 out setup vs a simple 1in 1out on the earlier style.

actually, the 94-96q external filter has 1 input and the OUTPUT is split into 2 to feed the two coolers in radiator

Ok thanks for clarifying.. I just ripped mine out!!

So is the proper circulation cycle is it comes from the 1 port tube, goes to the trans filter, then splits into 2 to each side cooler, then back to the 2 port tube back to the trans..... Good clarification.

My 92 also had the little finned heat sink on the trans line under the trans along with the ext. filter.

So I can assume that the trans was replaced at least once under warranty by infiniti?

Not that it matters. I need to get rid of it anyways, it's just taking up room. Anyone need a trans? It's in VA. No shipping.

its a kit. comes with the mounting bracket to the frame and 2 longish hoses attached. does not have the shorty hose to the pass side radiator tank.

It's a spin on filter just like an oil filter. Actually, it is an oil filter.

it is NOT a spin-on filter, the assembly is replaced as a sealed unit including filter element and casing/hose barbs and hoses-no replacable filter element,as the case is welded

similar in design,as it is a welded case containing a internal non replacable element, but shaped like a oil filter!

So should it be replaced at any interval? Mine's probably OE.

I would personally replace it with a filter with a screw on thing, an aftermarket one from summit or something like that. Should be the same price or cheaper than OEM and will allow you to conveniently replace your filter whenever you want.

I replaced mine somewhere around 120-140k if memory is correct-I think every 100k should be sufficient if you are replacing the atf at frequent intervals, say every 25-30k.I vote for just ordering stock kit from joe instead of trying to fabricate a universal kit with replacable element as the space is tight where it is located and the kit is a quick drop in process that infrequently needs attention and is affordable=around 70-80 dollars=much, much more important changing this filter than the coarse in pan screen strainer that everyone on this board worrys over as this is THE REAL FILTER,with a fine filtering element similar to an oil filter

I bet I am one of less than 5 people on this board to have EVER replaced this filter!!!!

Thanks for the information. Just looking at the filter I couldn't tell if it just screwed off like a oil filter. Anyway I guess this will be on my replacement list soon.
