wondering whether anyone here has ever replaced the external canister tranny filter located near radiator on their 94-96q? mine has 162,000 miles on it,and tech says never needs replacing until new tranny is needed,as the filter if clogged enough to require changing means the tranny is near death anyway?

Hi qship,

I recently had a transmission flush and replaced the fluid with Mobil one synthetic. I plan in the near future to replace the external transmission filter/cooler as described in the factory service manual.

I have approximately 167,000 miles currently with the original transmission, I do not have a aftermarket external transmission cooler and plan replacing the factory filter/cooler for two reasons.

First, after 167,000 miles anything described as a filter probably needs to be replaced.

Second, the factory service manual describes the filter also is a cooler, and with all the discussion on the board about installing aftermarket external transmission coolers I think it's prudent to replace the filter/cooler.

I believe the price of the filter between $40 and $60 from many of the sponsors of this site.

Honestly what I would do is get a remote tranny filter kit (summit racing) that way you can replace the filters with regular oil filters....

1. Does the 1991 Q45 have this filter/cooler?

2. When you buy an aftermarket transmission cooler like the B&M, is the the cooler/filter that some people have bypassed?

1. Some do... When they replaced the trannies in the early Qs, many times they put the updated cooler/filter in.

2. Yeah, we bypass the factory cooler and filter...

I am using FORD XC3Z-7B155-CA external transm kit on my Y33. This particular filter is used on A4OD (A-puke-OD)transm, on Ford E450 paratransit busses.
