So when I bought my new Murano last week, and finance guy offered me an extended warranty. The only time I have purchased an extended warranty was for our Honda Odyssey. I figured since it had the Nav, DVD and power doors (i.e., lots of electronics), and we were going to keep it for 6-7 years at least, it would be worth it. THe price they gave me on it was pretty good to- 7 year 100K warranty for about $1000. (this is the Honda I am talking about)

The Nissan guy offered me a 7 year 70000 mile warranty for $1780. Too expensive for me, but once I got the car home, I started to think about it. There are a number of private extended warranty companies, and one specific one that I would feel comfortable with. The price is lower, and the terms are longer, so that is fine. 7 year 85000 miles for $1200. But the question really is, with the new Murano is this going to be a waste of money?

I have had mostly Honda's in the past, with one Infiniti, and have never had any major repairs (knock on wood). For other people here who have had Nissans in the past...any advice? I am looking to keep this car at least 6 years, and probably won't put more than 80000 miles on in that time. It will be my daily driver with 95% highway driving, and won't be driven hard at all.

Thanks

Viper, the warranty could be worth it if the plan is to drive the Murano past its powertrain warranty. Whether thats $1780 or $1200 it is still much better than paying the cost of replacing the CVT at $4k+. It may never be used but it's good security.

It's possible to argue that the Murano has lots of electronics as well. How well they will hold up long term is anyone's guess at this point since the redesigned model is still new.

The most common failure I've seen on these forums and on NM.org seem to be power door lock and CVT failure.

$1200 to extend your powertrain warranty to 85K miles seems a lot to me. It would be better if it took you from the 60K Nissan warranty to 100K, but it's still a gamble.

I could be wrong, but I don't think the 60-100K range is where most of the few CVT failures that have been reported here happened. I think most were before 60K.
