wassup guys.

i just wanted to see how many of you have actually blown the turbo on your SRs because i think i might have done that.

well to start of with a little bit of background i live in fremont and attend wyotech (raise your hand if you go there, hah).

i was on 880N heading to Hayward. I downshifted from 3rd (@ 3000 RPM) to 2nd (to 5000+ RPM). the car ran for about 5-10 more seconds then BOOM! i heard what sounded like the cat exploded. then the car continued to run but it would stall and die out with my foot off the throttle. i would have to start the car in the middle of the freeway just to park on the shoulder, and from there i...:

-smelled and actually saw smoke rise up from the downpipe, behind the turbo and 02 housing.

-saw the cat glowing when the car was firing on its power stroke (you could see it backfire, igniting some gas inside the cat)

-had to keep my foot on the throttle to keep the car from dying

-feel the temp of the entire engine (radiator didnt burst when i opened the top so it didnt over heat from the boost) to figure it was at op temp

-watch oil drip on top of the downpipe

i should have paid attention to the small drippings of oil and the exhaust leaks i had a long time ago but stupid me just let it go. so now here i am knowing or being told of a couple of things.

-it could just be a turbo problem...lack of lubing, oil ingestion, etc. so i would probably end up buying the coveted disco potato. then that would mean a new downpipe, and full straight exhaust.

-my instructors said i MIGHT HAVE shattered the piston rings. so i will run a compression check soon as well as check the cam timing to see if it might have skipped a tooth during the downshift. if thats the case and its all bad, then ill completely rebuild the SR.

soo...why did i post? simply because i wanted to see how YOUR CARS were acting when the turbo died. share with me your experiences so i know that its just the turbo.

i would also like to know if any of you have run that GT28RS setup in your cars and how you made it work. i hear its pretty straightforward.

anyways, drop a line and lets talk about it. haha take care guys.

Sounds more like your hotpipe or somewhere along your intercooler piping came off under the boost making a loud "POP" noise.
