So I just had a very shocking experience. Driving on the highway with no cars near me, the sunroof just exploded and showered glass all over me and my passenger. Nothing outside caused this. My body shop guy says that he has had four instances like this, this year. Local Nissan dealer says a near new Maxima just had this happen. What the heck?? Nissan Canada show little interest in the issue at all. They just say it's glass and is not covered by warranty. No concern about it or interest in looking into the cause. Check this story on NBC from last year. http://www.nbcchicago.com/news/local/Ca ... 79631.html

Anyone else hear of this issue? What can we do?

Wow, that is weird. I wonder what could be causing these explosions. It sounds like a defect from the manufacturer to me. This is the first I've heard of them. Is your insurance taking care of it for you?

Actually this is a very common problem, has been happening with several car brands. You can google it.

I became aware of this issue on a Mazda forum a few years ago, it was happening to many CX-5 owners.

Insurance is covering it, but I have a $300 deductible. :( So if this is a common problem, what is being done to address it?

Just spoke to Nissan Canada who tell me that they are aware of the issue, but do not feel it is a manufacturer defect. It's just what tempered glass can do. I find that very surprising.

Were there any warning signs? The frame of mine was rattling and, despite my insistence that Nissan try to correct the issue, they simply would put some sort of foam rubber type of material up around the frame so it didn't have direct contact with the roof liner. On the positive side, that did stop the tin/metal-ish rattling noise.

However, now I'm noticing a rattling sound that is more like glass. So, your post makes me a little nervous. I also have the '14 SL. Did all of the glass shatter (i.e. the sliding part and the stationary part over the rear seats)?

Hi,

I'm a reporter with Consumer Reports. I'm working on a story about the exploding sunroof phenomenon, and I'd love to speak to anyone who's experienced this problem personally. If you're interested, please drop me a line at [email protected]

Thanks,
Thomas Germain
