Has anyone else tried this oil additive called "Engine Restorer"? They sell it at Walmart, comes in a can about the size of a can of pop, bluish stuff. The claim is that it restores compression, gas mileage, prolongs engine life . . . . . My understanding is that it thickens the oil so there is less pressure leakage around the rings.

So I tried it for a week and then took compression readings before and after. Before they were:149134150151

now they're:156141156156

I was hoping for it to even out the compression a little bit more instead of just increasing it across all four. I don't think I notice a power difference while driving and I haven't fill up again to know if there are improvements in gas mileage.

I'm wondering if there are any negative drawbacks to continuing to use this stuff or if others have past experiences with this. Would I be able to just substitute heavier oils like 20w-50 instead of buying this stuff? Has anyone notice this much difference in compression going from 5w-30 to 20w-50?

Aww At my last dealer we used to use that stuff in our used cars [per management] to quiet them down so when customers came to look at them they couldnt tell something was wrong with the car.

There is no such thing as mechanic in a bottle,as that stuff is commonly referred to as. I dont know the long term effects of that GUNK but I can imagine how much the lifters and hydrolic tensioner must not like it.

yeah, i am skeptical too. i have seen compression go up after an engine flush one time. it was just thinner oil causing the engine to rotate faster(i think). maybe the bg moa additive did something to the rings but as i said i am skeptical.

know what really helps comression? new rings. still your numbers are not bad.

as a general rule, engine oil aditives are a bad idea.

Ok, I filled up today. Gas mileage came out to be exactly the same this week as the week before. I guess there aren't any realizeable benefits (feeling extra hp or gas mileage) to laying down an extra $5 every oil change for this stuff then.

If it's the blue stuff in the silver can "with CSL", be aware that it stands for "copper, silver and lead". I put some in an old truck motor one time and was leaking oil from the front and rear mains in less than a week. There's no real band-aid for worn rings. Thin oil can't cure blow-by and the thick oil gets into the combution chamber because the tired oil rings aren't strong enough to wipe it off the cylinder walls. I'd advise you use a can of QMF (quick motor flush) and go back to using the OEM recommend oil viscosity.
