ok, i took my catalytic converter a while back, and everything was fine, but now everything behind the test pipe fell off because of a bad weld, so i've currently got a straight pipe that sounds awful. i bought a nice tip today (nobody say anything about that, because im not just a ricer out to put a fancy chrom tip on a factory exhaust), and i'm either gonna remove the guts from the catalytic converter, run a piece of perforated steel tubing through it, and fill the empty space around it with fiberglass, or just stick the cat on as it is. no matter which of the 2 i do, im then gonna run new piping back, and put on the tip on the end so it looks half decent. which of my 2 options is gonna give me the best performance, noise reduction, tone, etc...? (PS: the tip has a little resonator in it)

why don't you grind off the bad weld and re-weld the test pipe?

are you really strapped for cash or what? If its effed up just replace it. And if your talking upgrade, you could just get some bigger pipe and buy the bent pieces to make your own exhaust real cheap from your local pep boys or what ever you have there in canada. Its not the same as the stuff most of the guys have around here but still effective.

Replace cat with one from Random Tech. Use 2.5" tubing from there. For full performance use straight pipe muffler, for a bit of noise control use a turbo muffler.

If noise is an issue, use a better design factory type replacement muffler, like IMCO's. Check if a 300ZX muffler fits and go for that.

I can barely even decipher this post, ok, here is what you should do. Order a 2.5 inch Random Tech cat from http://www.summitracing.com. Find your local muffler shop, and tell them to replace your exhaust from the cat-back. Buy a magnaflow muffler or something to go on the end without some big flashy chrome tip. Leave it to the professionals, it doesn't sound like you have NEAR the level of proficiency to do this well at all by yourself. It will end up costing you around $280 with the new cat and muffler, and you won't have to worry about it anymore.

ok, i got it done last night, and heres what i did. i put the old stock cat back on, and then got the local exhaust shop to bend a piece into shape for me, then i welded it on, and hung it all the way back. if i got an aftermarket cat, it would probably be a little faster, but its fine how it is, and it sounds good.

If you want more performance, you have to get the hi-flow cat, which usually have a bigger in/out diameter. If you get the one from Random Tech, buy also the matching output flange for your tubing for a better fit.
