MY friend is is about to purchase exhaust for his 95 240. The question is whats the best priced and best sounding exhaust? He is looking towards an Apxi Catback system. Do those just bolt directly onto the stock cats?

to answer your question: yes they should bolt right up (in theory) I haven't looked into Apexi much but previously was thinking about getting that system.... But for the cost I would recommend you and/or your friend check out the sticky here about BRM's exhaust. I believe that is a solid system and the costomer support and feedback has been great with their exhausts! I'm still waiting for the bank to get enough money in it for me to purchase myself a BRM exhaust... all in good time though

if he is NA, try and find an exhaust wit 2.5" piping. It will be much better than any exhaust with 3" piping. I have the Greddy Trust SP with 2.5" piping and it sounds great, and I noticed quite a bit of increase in power over stock. With the Apexi N1 single 3", it did not sound as good, nor did it help out that much with power.

3" makes more power n/a on both the SR20DE engine and the KA24DE engine.

hmm.... are you sure? Can I get a link to some evidence supporting that claim on the KA24DE? Everything I have heard, and done first-hand tells me that 2.5" on a NA KA24DE is better than a 3"

I am absolutly positive that Alan is correct in this matter. I had the Blitz Nur Spec on my single cam and it pulled like a mofo on the top end. The only reason you may *think* that the 2.5" makes more power is because it makes power a little lower in the curve, and doesnt sacrifice any low end TQ. However, it will still trail off power on the top end compared to a 3" exhaust.

On my friend's S14 he went from a 2.5" no name catback to a 3" blitz and still made noticeable power in the midrange and up high, without a noticeable drop in low end TQ

If there are two people in this world that I know are right about most things car related, it is Nismo Freak (Alan) and 240_Keyy (Keith). The 3" will give you better top end and 2.5" will give you better bottom end. Plain and simple. The 3" will also be hella loud, so I would not get the Apex N1. It is non resnoated, and on my N/A RX-7, it was LOUD (but rotaries are always loud when you uncork them). You won't notice the loss in torque to be honest. Now, I went fron no exhaust on my CA, to full 3" from O2 housing to test pipe, then 3.5" cat-back (HKS Hi Power) and I noticed a HUGE gain in tractible torque.

Get the 3".

well, the fact that it is 3" doesnt really make it loud, that is all in the design of the muffler canister

remember rick, my car is quiet as hell with my baffle in, but if you take it out, holy jeezus, secksie!

I think the 2.5 vs 3" exhaust was argued in the KA forum. Someone had dynos to show the 3" made more power up top without low rpm loss.

it was argued yes, but only that 3" doesnt sacrifice any power, we still dont have proof that shows the difference between 3" and 2.5" on the same car with the stock engine...were waiting though because i think someone was going to do the test using these exact circumstances...

Yeah I remember the guy upgraded to 3" exhaust and some other goodies so the dynos werent directly comparable. But I'm already cinvinced 3" is the way to go, especially if theres a turbo in your future.
