:help

I am kind of new when it comes to making my car faster, so please help. I just developed a large hole in my muffler, and by the grace of God and the support of my wife, and a little extra $$ form Dad I am shopping for a new exhaust system. This includes a high flow Cat. a cat back system, and possibly a header if I can find one cheaper then 400$. I would like to keep the whole project under a grand. any suggestions on what I should do? Also when I look under my car it is my understanding that I have a pipe that runs from my stock header, to my stock cat. then a pipe with a bulge on the middle, which correct me if Im wrong is my resonator, to the first muffler and then another pipe that goes to the next muffler and out into the air. If I get a cat back system will this bypass the resonator and the first muffler completly to where it goes straight from my Cat. to the muffler into the air?

I don't know much, but I'll try to help since nobody has replied yet... I do know that a catback system and headers will run you about $800 plus labor if you're not doing it yourself. From reading other threads it seems that the HKS Hiper (which i'm planning to get) and the APEXi N1 are the most popular catbacks and I don't think there's a resonator or 1st muffler, if you search around you can see pics of what it looks like. As for headers, just look on some performance sites, http://www.enjukuracing.com is a pretty good one for the 240sx. I think they're around $330-$350.

kristen's right... you can probably ask the guys at http://www.nsport.com. they can hook you up with some NA packages for a good price. headers + high flow cat + exhaust will probably run around 900-1000. I might sell my hotshot headers soon for s14s. If you make me an offer I'll consider it. They are 5 months old.

i got the hks hiper, i love it, i didnt get the full system, but i got custom piping, no resonator or first muffler, but im just waiting to get a high-flow-cat. i think the apex n1 is built about the same as the hiper, but if you go with one of those, i garuntee you'll love it.

Depends on your car. S13s run a catalytic converter underneath the car, while S14s it's close-coupled to the manifold. If you do a header on an S14 you'll lose the cat completely, luckily there is a resonator in place where the cat resides on S13s. Some aftermarket exhausts have a resonator, some don't, either way is fine as long as you don't mind increased noise form not having a resonator. You can get away with the whole setup for less than a grand if you shop smart.

my s14 had a cat under the car as well as a pre cat in the manifold. it will depend on which car you have since i've seen other 240s with only the manifold cat.

Only a very small number of S14s actually had an under car cat, it was part of the emissions changes done in mid-95, and they were more common on autos. Either way, the main cat is off the manifold since the second O2 sensor is placed between the 2 pieces. Most of the ones I've seen have screens at each end, but are hollow when looked through under a light.
