my stock muffler needs to be replaced, I want to go with an aftermarket muffler now, I want a dual tipped one, but I don't want that noisy coffee can sound. I would like something thats a little throatier then stock but more low-key then what most other car fanatics have. Does anyone have any suggestions? Is there such thing as a happy medium here? Or do I just have to go with the exhaust/silencer plan?

I would like to get something that looks like this http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors...32600or thishttp://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors...80387or thishttp://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors...61932

But if I'm going for the quietist aftermarket exhaust, should I be looking for ones with the smallest tips? like 2 1/2 compared to the 3 1/2 tips? is there much of a sound difference between such size differences? bare with me, I'm no grease monkey here.

magnaflow makes a good muffler. Its a little loud but not extremely. It sounds really nice. I had a vortec muffler before and it was throaty but really quiet both those are good muffler though. If you go with a N-1 style it will be a little too loud. Magnaflow has all different tip styles and comes in both aluminized and stainless.

take it to a garage that works with imports especially, that ora muffler shop, and have them weld you a 2.25"exhaust w/ 2 mufflers at stock locations...this larger piping and the better mufflers will let u get that low purr you want w/o sacrificing rice-ability...

make sure u dont buy the 99 cent special mufflers too...look for magnaflow or flowmaster, the higher priced ones will do you right every time...i know flowmaster makes a specialized muffler for quiet performance

A flowmaster 50 or 60 series sounds like exactly what you are looking for. The 60 series is designed for imports and is smaller but will cost more and might not be in stock but both have a really nice deep mellow sound. Then just pick what ever kind of tip you want but make sure you spend the extra for a stainless tip, chrome will look like crap in 6 months.
