for N/A you should get a header (hotshot, pace setter) high flow cat or a test pipe (just a straight through pipe w/flanges), 2.25"-2.5" diameter piping with your choice of a muffler. you can get 3" pipe diameter, but it isn't recommended because of the lack of backpressure and noise illegality (i know my friend gets pulled over a lot with his 3" exhaust 240) you should go with a catback rather than a custom exhaust since the customs tend to leak unless they are stainless steel (very expensive). you can get a really good stainless catback for the price that you'd pay for a mild steel custom job.

for turbo, you will probably need an aftermarket downpipe with either a high flow cat or no cat (no cat recommended) with a 3" diameter catback. custom turbo exhausts fabbed out of mild steel at muffler shops leak like a ***** also, so be careful.

hope this helps. good luck on your quest for the "final exhaust solution"

You can't just run straight pipe, it needs to bend to clear the rear. There are a lot of unnecessary bends in the stock tubing you can get rid of if you do custom exhaust though. For a header, a lot of people go with Hotshot, and now DC Sport makes a header for 240's. They are the two I would choose from if I were you (I have DC Sport and its real nice)...I've heard Pace Setter headers are cheaply made.

Definately replace the restrictive stock converter, go with a high flow from Catco, Magnaflow, etc. If you live somewhere that emissions are not a problem, you can eliminate the cat, but then think about your grandchildren's air you are polluting.

2.25 - 3" tubing are all popular choices, and a lot of people argue which is better. Just remember backpressure is not a good thing. I have heard of a 16hp gain by using 3" pipe, but it is pretty loud. I put together a full exhaust for my s13 for around $400 - DC Header, Catco cat, 2.25" tubing, and a Tanabe Tuner Medallion muffler...haven't had any problems with it and it sounds real nice. Don't know if I got much from it, I never dyno'd it with the stock exhaust.

Or of course you could go with one of the popular catback systems - BRM, Apexi, and the list goes on. It would probably be cheaper to make your own though, if you have the resources.

No problem, and I forgot to tell you last time but welcome to NICO.

I got the muffler off Ebay for $100 (retails for like $248 I believe) so definately check there for everything.

I got the converter and header out of Summit Sport Compact Catalog, but you might be able to find them cheaper somewhere else. Check all the forum sponsors, they probably have what you are looking for.

Are you planning on doing this yourself or a shop doing it for you?

the best place i have seen for the DC headers is from sportcompactonly.com if your going to build your own exhaust i would say go wtih 2.50" pipe. i used that on my old vw gti and it sounded good. it was a cat back with a magnaflow muffler.

The forum sponsors are on the top and right side of the page, the banners that circulate around. And there are a lot of them at 240sx.org

If you have the tools and knowledge then no it's not that hard at all. I got a shop to bend the pipe for me and I welded the muffler on and bolted everything up. I had to make my own bracket for the muffler and alter all the other hangers too. If you found a good shop it would probably be less of a headache to get them to do it. It's kind of a pain...all the rust and frozen bolts!

Thanks for the compliment, you're welcome for everything.

I don't know much about converters, this is where someone else can come in. I don't even know if they have emissions testing in Florida, but if they do you want to find a high flow that is still good enough to filter out the bad stuff.

Exhaust solution? BRM, Apexi, GReddy, etc. I wouldn't go any bigger than a 2.25 or 2.5 inch exhaust on an NA KA. Maybe a 3 inch, but I wouldn't recomend it. You want to put a high flow cat-back exhaust on it and a decent header. Hotshot makes the most well known header for the 240. But DC Sports, GReddy, Jim Wolf, OBX, and others make headers as well.
