All three of my R50's have required new exhausts -- thankfully, only the first one had the poor Nissan fix to the front twin resonators. The resonators split along the crimps --- the Nissan fix was muffler putty and straps -- that naturally failed in short order and the only long term fix was replacement after that. The long term fix w/o the putty was to weld the edges of each resonator -- can't weld once buddy was used.

The middle section and the rear resonator eventually fail on all of them -- the pipes go first at the connection by the axel. I had all of mine welded to extend the life. But -- eventually they had to be replaced. The OE are in the $1200-$1500 range the last I looked.

Typically I found the Bosal to be the best all around solution .. they sell the center in one piece. The last time I did one I was not as impressed with the rear made by Bosal -- so this time I used the Walker SS and the Bosal center. We will see how that works -- with shipping it's just over $200 for both.

Many people don't understand that those twin resonators are indeed resonators ----many think that they are cats .. they are not. the pipes hold the O2's .. but are not cats. The replacement for these are tubes and change the exhaust .. on my original R50 I went with the Bosal for these.

Thanks for sharing yeldogt. Might you have any pictures of the setup, maybe before/after?

Sorry -- I don't .. my local Indie did the work. If you go to Rockauto they sell all the different examples ... and there are many diagrams. Think the manuals are still available in the stickies ... correct?

Walker makes two different lines -- the SS line has the rear resonator in SS vs AL. Typically on the OE system the rear resonator pipe fails first -- the resonator after .. and then all the pipes rust through. The walker set up for the center is the muffler and two pipes -- the Bosal is like the OE with the pipes welded to the muffler. The Bosal is better. Typically aftermarket exhaust only last a few years if in a harsh area -- I replaced them maybe 4 year ago. It sounded like the Bosal resonator rusted internally on mine. Not wanting to have the same issue again (I hope) ordered the Walker SS resonator and since doing it -- I replaced the center as well going with the same Bosal as before .. being two different manufacturers it was a gamble it would all fit. My Indie supplied the gaskets and connectors -- said it went in fine. For $100 bucks I'm not going to play with an old exhaust system. As I said my front resonators are fine as they are SS --

Thanks Yeldogt, this explains why someone put a crappy welded glass pack in place of the resonator on my '03 QX4 before I bought it. They probably didn't want to splurge on the Nissan repair even though it wouldn't have been much better thank what they did. I had it smogged in CA and boy was there someone questioning about it at first.

Yeldogt, you said the Bosal exhaust just eliminates those two front resonators with pipes? When you put that setup on your R50 do you notice if it was any louder by not having those resonators there anymore? Thanks!

Just realized you said the OE exhausts run about 1200-1500 I thought you had originally said just any exhausts, cause they can be had from Rock Auto for a little over $300.

I can’t imagine the OE exhaust is worth buying over other AM replacements. I too also thought the 2 tubes in back were the cats but realized they were in fact resonators. I had to get my car inspected recently and failed as the previous owner had them patched previously so I just bought 2 replacement resonators off eBay for like 120. Anyways I was planning on getting a Magnaflow muffler to replace the current muffler in the middle and then remove the back single resonator. I was hoping by removing that one resonator I would be able to get a better sound from the magnaflow or do you think I would need to just delete the back 2 resonators all together and keep the 1 single resonator with the Magnaflow muffler?
