I have a 91 240SX, im putting a high-flow air filter on it and I want to have the exhaust system re-done with a free-flow cat, and muffler. My question is what size piping should I get? the car is normally asperated with the KA24 engine. My friend who works at a performance shop said i should probably get either 2.25 or 2.5 inch piping. Anyone have any advice/reccomendations ?

If your friend at the shop has a welder or a pipe bender buy some aluminized 2.5 pipe and buid your own and buy a nice muffler, its a lot cheaper and you get the pride and experience of having done a custom job.You could also go with stainless pipe but its really expensive and hard to find plus you need to have a welder that can tig,but it stays beautiful and lasts forever. If you plan to go turbo sometime go as big as you can fit under the car within reason. All in all it will be much cheaper and you will have just as nice or nicer stuff than is available, exhausts systems for imports are SO over priced.

if you do the custom exhaust thing, stay away from economy mufflers like the thrush turbo.......i screwed up and am now driving a car that sounds worse than any fart cannon equipped honda.......my piping is 2.5" to just in front of the rear wheels, then necks down to 2.25" and meets the muffler in the stock location

what are some of the nicer mufflers out there as I am planning on having my 3" exhaust custom built and I will be needing one.

The niceest exhaust is this...

...a 3.5 inch straight pipe, no mufflers, resonators or cats. Have it come out at an angle from the stock bumper cut out and leave it naked with no exhaust tip.

are u looking to spend alot of money? The Tanabe Hyper Medallion is a nice system and sounds real nice for a decent price.. 550 for catback and T-304 stainless piping.. but as for that custom piping.. i am gonna do it too cuz u save money and u get custom.. But The HKS Hiper is also a real nice system.

huckedup read my original post. If I put 3.5 inch piping on a normally asperated engine, i would be ummm... screwed -=/. And Ryan I am a poor college student anythign HKX or greddy aiint gonna happen but thanks for the reccomendation. I only plan on having the car for a couple years so im not gonna dump a whole lot of money into it.

Straight through exhaust actually isn't that loud on a turbo car if the cams aren't huge,I had a friend with a GN and he could uncork the exhaust for when he went to the strip it it really sounded almost quieter than with the system hooked up(it was a flowmaster system though)untill he got to wide open then it was pretty loud but still tolerable.Actually the turbo acts as a muffler by running the exhaust gas through it alot of the sound is dissapeted. A nice muffler is a borla, or any stainless or titanium will undoubtly have superior quality.

RS*R GT-II. extremely straight piping and i think its about 80mm. prolly too big of a diameter for a N/A engine but i plane on turbo
