ok so i have to replace a few pieces of my exhaust, my question is does changing to a different muffler really improve fuel economy or am i throwing money at something useless

Absolutely improves gas mileage and horsepower. Checkout Flowmasters website. Also checkout user reviews.
I spent many hours finding what would be best for my 97 Pathi. Hands down I now run Flowmaster. If i had to
install another brand, I would have gone with Magnaflow. I'm extremely satisfied with the Flowmaster as i
immediately noticed my HP gain and its nice prrrrrr it gives off. After a few full tanks of gas I averaged it out
to (1.2)-(1.4) mpg. In my book, thats great!. Good luck
