Hi Guys and Gals (if there are any members that are :gotme )

I want to know - what is the resonator? and what is the muffler? is the resonator the part that sticks out of the back by the spare tire? and is the muffler that big thing that sits below the body of the vehicle? Just wanted to make sure - cuz i grow weary of seeing the resonator sticking out the back.

Do you have any suggestions as it comes to a nice muffler. I've seen some people say FLowmaster Series 40 i believe - but i'm not too sure.

And also can the resonator be just a tip or if it is just like a tip will it be too loud?

Also where i live the cats aren't important as we do no emissions checks - so will taking them off do any good or will it throw an Error Code?

Thanks :poke:

hello, i know on my QX4, the resonators are located below the driver and passenger seats. The muffler is the part that part at the back of the vehicle where the tail pipe sticks out of. That is the part where you generally install the tip. I purchased a chrome tip from the dealership when i bought my QX4, much better than the steel sticking out...hope this helps...

As far as I knew on my '03 Pathy, it's the other way around. The muffler is the large unit under the seats, and does the majority of the silencing work. The resonator is the small unit at the back by the spare tire, and helps keep things that much more quiet.

When my exhaust pipe between the muffler and resonator rusted though, the muffler still did a good job at keeping things quiet. It was only at certain RPMs -- around 1500 I think -- where there was more noise than usual. When I spliced in another piece of pipe and fixed things up, that noise was gone. It's the resonator's job to clean up the noises that the muffler can't completely take care of.

Yours should be just like everyone else's. If it's not that's very odd.

Very happy with Magnaflow. Custom pipe from the Magnaflow back. No need for the coffee can resonator near the tailpipe as mentioned.
