Alright, I know that the stock exhaust for our 240's is pretty restrictive. What's the best (and cheapest) aftermarket exhaust for our cars. I'm looking for something very quiet because I can't stand loud N/A 4 bangers.

Also, mufflers are always placed right at the end of the exhaust system. What's the reason for this? Why not place it right behind the cat and have just a long straight pipe leading the fumes away from the car? Just kinda curious what'd happen if I did this.

Cheapest way: eBay muffler for $30, then go to a muffler shop and have them replace your stock piping with 2.50 or 2.75 and weld on the muffler.

id agree with silkk on the cheapest way, but for the best way, i'd recommend brm. stock looks, stock mounts, quiet if you get a resonator, perfect mandrel bends, what more do you need?

What diameter pipeing somes stock on our 240's? I wouldnt have considered 2.5 inches to be a much bigger upgrade for exhaust.

Problem is, he's in Indiana. That **** will rust after a few winters. Still, I guess he could get some stainless mandrel bent piping off the web, a resonator and a muffler, but he probably would end up spending more than an aftermarket exhaust would cost unless he can weld.

If your looking for something that will give good performance and still be pretty quiet, the BRM and one of the RS-R exhausts come to mind.

We've got some shops around here that do some pretty good work with custom stainless steel. You usually see them on trucks (sticking up like semi's exhaust... rednecks) but I'm sure they could make something work for my car.

So back to another question, why is the muffler at the very end of exhaust systems? I'm just curious as to what it would sound like if there was still quite a bit of pipe after it.
