Here'll the previous owner of my z decided to take the cats out and straight pipe the car, the car is loud but I can deal with it, but first I need to pass California smog laws, my question to you, is if I have a couple stripped cars laying around can I just cut two cats off and weld them on my exhaust and pass smog for a day?

I never had to deal with having my car smogged in cali but I would think you should be able to as long as the cats bring the CO lvl's down to withen limit. Visually it shouldn't matter whether they were welded in or not as long as they are there.

Lunzee, where are you? different states have different laws and regulations, in TX that would be fine as long as the emissions levels were brought down to acceptable/passable. in Cali AFAIK the cats must be CARB certified for the specific vehicle they are on otherwise you do not pass go and do not collect $200.

Lunzee, I'm not 100% on Cali emissions laws but I am pretty sure you will need stock 300zx cats before you can pass emissions. Check with your local emissions authority (dps/dmv/CARB) not sure who handles it in your state.

Well I know California emissions laws require stock cats but the smog shops here don't check visuals just if any cats will lower the emissions enough.

And thank you ttman I appreciate it

High flow cats can pass sniffer tests if fully warmed up, but may fail visual at an anal-retentive station.

No cats will fail a sniffer test.
