Exhaust Problem.....

Alright, when my car was driveable, i blow a big hole in sumn...... underneath as you follow the exhaust pipe from the engine, i see the cat, following even farther, around the mid of the car, if you were to open your door and look straight under, theres and muffler lookin like thing.. thats whats got the hole in it. now, if you follow even farther, theres the muffler. Id like to know what the middle muffler like lookin thing is. Would that be the resignator? making noise levels lower? and can i take it out and replace it with a pipe? after this weekend when i fix my clutch, this is the only thing stopping me from having my car legalized.

I do believe that it is a resonator... And you could probably replace it with just a pipe. That should be able to pass emissions...

What about the cats? do both of them need to be on the exhaust system? or can I eliminate the semond one?
