While the J will run just fine without the heat shields, I'm more of a mind to keep all the original parts that I can. If you can get the car up on a lift or stands, hit the exhaust pipe with a hammer and you should be able to hear where the rattle is coming from. Making some deft cuts on the shield(s) with a hacksaw which would allow the installation of a simple hose clamp around the affected area will stop the buzz and then you can still park over dead leaves. I would also tend to think that the heatshields would also stop some heat transfer into the passenger area of the car. As we J owners all know, the J30 can get really hot for some reason. A/C is a must in this car.pitaq wrote:Good point Vimy !
All the heat shields on my J30 have either fallen off or been removed by choice because they were about to rust through and fall off. Whenver I heard an underbody rattle, I knew it was time to grab the pliers, crawl underneath and start yanking off a hanging shield.
So long as I don't park over top of a pile of dry leaves after a long drive, I assume not having the heat shields is no big deal.
