My '96 I30 has about 98,000 miles. About 5000 miles ago, we can smell strong odor (very much like exhaust) everytime I made a stop or had a turn with slowdown with AC/heat on. Have asked the Infiniti mechanics to look at it three times. The mechanics kept on pointing at the slight damage at the trunk as the reason the exhaust leaked into the car. I used towel to stuff shut the two inlets in the trunk, but still had the odor problem. The only way is to activate the recirculation on the AC on to shut off air from outside. In the third time, the mechanics said likely it is the carburization of the fuel injectors created some combustion problem. He did have a lengthly explanation, but I could not catch everything he said except it had something related to fuel/air mixture. Had the injectors cleaned, and the problem seemed to be somewhat better, but the odor is still there although not as rich as before. Is his diagnosis correct? If the problem has improved, should I add fuel additive or had decarburization done one more time to get rid of the problem completely?Need some expert advice.

Where are you located city and state and what refinery are you buying gas from, go to local storage facility and ask...the station won't know, the tanker driver won't know only the storage tank farm techs will know.

Exhaust doesn't smell and is safew to breath IF the engine is operating correctly.........what are your emission parameters test results?

Seems like I've heard of leaking EGR tubes on some I30s. I'd think you're leaking it somewhere under the hood and pulling it into the HVAC inlet under the windshield cowl. You might also search the posts at Maxima.org for your problem... lot's of info on your car's near twin there as well. Welcome to NICO!

Q45tech:I am located in Ashburn, VA near DC. I buy gas from Exxon, Mobil and Texaco, but I would not know what refinery the gas came from. I do not use one gas station all the time but "gas" the car when it is convenient, but only use the above three brands. I only use premium gas since the car was new.

Q451990: Thank you for your info. Will check the posts as you suggested.

Thank you both for responding and so quickly.

Since all gasoline is fungible [interchangable in the region] and the only differences [if any] are the additives added to the base stock as the tanker truck fills up at depot.....the Sulfur is in the base stock and the additives won't do anything to remove it.
