I have an exhaust leak that I believe to be in the second precat on my 99 i30. I am planning on replacing the Y-pipe altogether and getting a custom catback from a local exhaust shop.

Any cheap, QUALITY y-pipes out there? I know I can get the Warpspeed pipe for a good price through the site, but was wondering if anybody knows of anything else?

And does anyone have any temporary fixes that will help me avoid those dirty looks from everyone around me when i start my car or pull into a crowded parking lot ): lol

I bought a y-pipe for my old 4th gen from a place in Canada called budget Exhaust, but that was back around 2004. Not sure if they are still around or if they still make the y-pipe, but might be worth the time to look into it.

If you can isolate where the noise is coming from, you should be able to quiet is down some. If the pipe has a small hole, you can try using some moldable JB Weld and covering it with some header wrap once it's dried.

Or if the hole is in a straight run of pipe, you could try putting one of the clamps over it.

Thanks for the reply!

I looked into Budget as I was searching around, their site does not appear to be accessible anymore? Unless they have moved addresses or something. (I read somewhere that another company bought them out.

I have located the leak, it is on the flex pipe before the main cat. I've tried a lot of stupid "redneck" fixes over the weekend in 32° weather and none of them have worked.

I've discovered that aluminum foil works great to eliminate to sound and keep the exhaust flowing all the way through, I have also learned that (despite my better judgement, but out of desperation and the "it should be fine" of an elder whom I previously trusted on car matters) duct tape will indeed melt and burn when placed that close to the engine.

Exhaust wrap worked for about 3 miles, but due to extremely bumpy roads that are unavoidable on my trek to work, that quickly failed.

I wonder if aluminum foil (about 6 layers) wrapped in high heat exhaust wrap would hold better?

I know the best route would be to have the flex pipe replaced, but best isn't always cheapest. My idea was to patch it using materials I have around the house.

A new flex section piece should only be around $30. Have an exhaust shop weld it in for you.

If you choose to go the other route, I'd look at the foil tape they use to join duct work together, instead of aluminum foil. It's good and thick, but you'll need to check to see what kind of temps it can handle.

Sorry for the late response, but thanks for the advice. I'm thinking I will just get a new flex pipe welded in for now.

My mod list will have to wait as I put the I30 in the ditch Tuesday night on my way home from work. (Too fast around a slippery corner, started to slide. Didn't want to go head first into a bunch of trees so tried to gain control. Ended up doing a 180 and going into a steeper but less tree filled ditch on my side of the road. Had to call a tow truck. Pushed the driver's front fender up and out, seperated from inner wall front of tire. Knocked my cornering light loose and busted out my fog light lense. I need to learn to drive slower.)

Had the shop that pulled me out inspect the next day, they said everything looked okay. Don't really trust them though.

Not sure if it's because of the cold or if I ruined something, but my power steering squeals and feels very choppy when turning the wheel while the car is warming up. Discovered this this morning while moving my car into the driveway. It also did it again when I moved my car closer to the exit door on my break at work. However, when I left I had no such episode. Possibly ice buildup in the steering/suspension under the car? If problem persists tomorrow I will get it looked at.

I really like this car and need to treat it with the respect it deserves before I end up wrecking it.

I would get flex pipe and clamps.
My local repair shop would probably charge me 2-30 for repair.
