He means the engine is burning oil, which is very bad if its enough that you notice the level dropping between oil changes. The oil lubricates the engine, but does not enter the combustion chamber unless you have worn piston rings, scored piston walls or other issues associated with a worn engine. Burning oil can also be noticed by looking at the tail pipe emissions, as oil does not burn efficiently and is not meant to enter the combustion chamber, you will notice blue smoke at startup often if the engine is burning oil. The other issue with burning/consuming oil is that if you don't check the level often and keep it topped up, you can run the engine low on oil and this can damage or completely ruin an engine.
