I have a 240SX (S13) and my exhaust heat shield is currently being patched on with a hose clamp :)

Anyway, it's to the point where it will still vibrate and make a stupid rattling sound--so something needs to be done.

I could, of course, replace it with another OEM shield. However, I was wondering how effective a "heat wrap" approach would be (reference: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISA...33631).

I have doubts as to being effective enough as it doesn't allow for the surface area for heat disipitation (and all the space in-between!) the normal shielding does. Also, whouldn't it just get to the same (or nearly the same) temp as the exhaust anyway?

I really would like to remove/replace the stock shielding, but melting my shoes to the floor isn't an acceptable alternative :D

I assume you're talking about the shield between the exhaust manifold and the cat. I had the same problem, and mine too was held on by a hose clamp, plus the rusty factory bolts. My FSM actually shows the clamp in the exhaust section, so it probably came from the factory. Anyway, I removed just the part between the manifold and cat, and I haven't noticed any extra heat. If you remove it from the cat though, that could cause your shoes to melt.

Yes, I was refering to the entire section covering the exhaust manifold and running down to just before the cat.

I'll remove it off in a day or two -- but if my feet melt, I know your handle! :D

No problem. My feet never melted when I went 245 miles to Indy a couple of weeks ago, so I'm confident you won't have a problem. BTW, I had to beat the shiznit out of it with a hammer 'cause some of the bolts were rusted in so bad, so have "the motivator" ready just in case.

I'll have to "test" my new dremel cutting bits :)

on my 240SX (1990) there is a double arch shaped heat shield that came off with some rotted bolts... the heat shield came off of my header i am certain of that... it looks like this :

((

since that fell off my car has been sounding like a civic on crack... thinking... exhaust leak... maybe the rotted bolts when they came out left big gaping holes... i honestly have no clue
