exhaust elbow or downpipe?

hey guys, im a turbo noob, but i have a super 60 air research t3 turbo and im not sure if i need a exhaust elbow or can i just bolt on a downpipe. if i do need a exhaust elbow, where can i get one that would bolt onto my turbo?

Generally, exhaust elbows are for internally wastegated turbos. Downpipes are for externally wastegated turbos. Which kind do you have?

So just a downpipe will be fine. Make sure you get a flange that matches your turbo.

You will need to dump your wastegate gasses as well. You can either dump the gasses seprately (reccomended) with just a short pipe, or integrate the pipe with your downpipe at some point.

wait, i dont get it. so if i use a short pipe do i have to weld a flange for a wastegate then connect the downpipe to that?

So why is a seperated dump pipe for the wastegate recommended?

I like it better because sometimes an integrated dump tube can cause boost creep, as backpressure in the downpipe makes it harder for the wastegate to efficiently divert gasses around the turbine blades.

No, get a manifold designed for a externally wastegated turbo and your compressure size.

Actually the manifold needs to be designed for the turbine size (i.e. t3).

Get the flange with only 1 large hole in the middle (and of course holes for bolts)

OK, I THINK I know what you are trying to get at. I play with the turbo dodges which the airresearch t3 is native to. I'm assuming you are looking at the exhaust sid eof the turbo with a big oval bolted flange with the wastegate visible. If you are looking for a bolt-on elbow for this, look around for any 1987 and earlier tubo dodge. In 88 they went to mitubishi. If you want to buy one from a supplier, try FWD Performance. Look for the 2 1/2", it's more expensive, but the others are mostly 2 1/4". You'll still need a downpipe flange and 3" gasket donut to hook it all up.
