I'm racing an S13 3 valve in SCCA and was looking for some input as to what exhaust pipe diameter to use. The original owner put a 3" on it, but I'm wondering if I will pick up some torque if I go with 2.5". It's a NA car and I have less than 500 lift on the cam. Header is custom from HotShot.

experiment with a 2.25 and a 2.5 and see which one works better. 3 is definently too big. what is the header collecter diameter?

Says who? The only downside of 3" compared to stock is noise... There have been numerous dyno-sheets uploaded on here showing improvements all across the board on ka24de's. And from the #'s ppl were posting up, seems like 3" makes at least the same if not more hp & torque (all across the board again) than 2.5".

2.25 vs 2.5 vs 3 has been discussed to death... and well, still no "real" solid answer bcs no one feels like spending $200+ at the dyno swapping exhausts in and out and testing... all we can go off is what different n/a ppl test vs stock - and it seems there is no loss of torque/hp w/ either 2.5 or 3.

The amts you are looking @ btwn 3 & 2.5 are mostly neglible in terms of track time. Just all depends on how much you value your ears.

i never said it was too big for power. id go less than 3 inch for na. i wouldnt want my car to sound obnoxious. but im sure there are some ka's out there that sound good with a 3 inch exhaust. and im sure there are some that are absolutely horrendous

Well the first poster only mentioned torque and didn't mention anything about sound, and your didn't specifically mention anything about either... so I was just going off the first post. Sorry that I was mistaken.

Everyone says 3" is too loud, but a 2.5" with an *** muffler could be just as loud. If you want to spend the money you could make a 3" with 2 nice sized mufflers to quiet it down. Although... I have a 2.5" It's all about how much money you want to spend and if it's worth it to you

I always ask myself, what would Cole Trickle do?
