Conversion to OEM that is =/

There's been a couple hailstorms out here and we got a company to fix our roofing. Well the roofing company blocked one side of the drive way with a bunch of roofing material. It wasn't light enough to move so I had to work around it. But anyway, I usually pull in at an angle where the stuff is, reverse out at an angle, and then drive into my side of the garage with the help of the planks of wood you see on the ground. With the materials in the way I had a really hard time doing my usual routine and the wood ended up getting caught on my subframe, midpipe got stuck on wood / concrete ledge on edge of garage, reversing with half of my car on the wood / off the wood at an incline jammed my exhaust into the ground and voila! The first picture is the end result.

I figured the piping just came off the hanger and it'd be an easy fix. I was dead wrong. It was off the hanger but the tips would not realign with the holes no matter how I tried. I got it close, but not nearly close enough. Ended up running a muffler delete so that I could take it to a shop. The shop quoted me about $250 to fix it. One exhaust outlet was actually jammed up towards the end of the axle, meaning it was out of alignment. They would have to cut & re-weld the damaged part, and then try to line it up properly on my car via trial and error. I didn't want to put money into a free exhaust, especially since I'm broke so I decided to put my OEM one back on. I miss it so badly.. Car sounds super frail lol. Now that I don't have it and looking at buying a new one / fixing it, I really realized how nice this exhaust is. I wish I could have done a drive by recording before this happened. With this exhaust and an intake, it sounds like a stock / lightly modded g35 or 350z. It sounds PERFECT, not raspy at all. And like people said, it got deeper in time. I'll probably end up fixing this one or buying another one and adding new tips.

I know my car is low and stuff like this comes with the territory but this was merely an accident. I never have issues, I don't drive as slow as you think so don't get all crazy about how being slammed is stupid blah blah. This is the first time where being low has damaged my car.

Thanks for the advice regarding the angling. The part requiring welding is near where the axle back connects to the mid pipe. Do you really think it should be priced any lower? The welding might not be the hard part, its that it doesn't fit properly on my car they would have to take it off numerous times to align it right. I'm not really sure... I miss it BAD though. I feel like there's something wrong with my car due to the lack of drone haha

yeah that price is steep. I meant they provided me with new magnaflow mufflers, new piping, and they did the custom pipe bending for 300. Look into new mufflers. If you like the greddy SE tips look into some similar if you dont wanna have that hefty price tag. have a new custom axle back made for ya.

Sorry to here about that Alex. I'm 100% with Irvxing, try having a completely new axel back made.

But then it won't sound the exact same, right? Man I'm telling you it sounded so good... How cheap do you guys think it would be to fix? I expect a simple welding job to be cheap but I would imagine they would have to cut, weld, test once, cut, weld, test fit again if it doesn't align properly, and so on.

This is where the real damage is I believe. The entire piping has been jammed up towards the axle.

See the dented area? And even if they fix it, there's no guarantee that it will align properly, right?

have em chop off the tips and just fab you up new piping from the axle and re weld the tips. Thats if you absolutely want to keep it the same. N1 style tips all sound similar because they are straight through design. If you were to add a bigger muffler, double walled like i did then it would sound different. Contact Top speed and see if they are willing to send you just the axle back part of the exhaust for cheaper.

Well I took everyone's advice and took it to a shop. They pretty much re-created my axle back, aside from the mufflers. The mufflers are more straight as opposed to angled now as well. I think it sounds just like how it used to but I don't think it looks as clean, which is expected? I had a really bad experience but at least it got done for $90. I'll try to take some nice pics and record more video clips once I lower her back down and put my wheels back on.

I fixed my exhaust

Image

But I had a horrible experience at the shop I went to.

I arrived at 2:40pm and explained to them that, "I damaged the axle back portion of my aftermarket exhaust. The right muffler had been sitting on the bumper so I took it off to prevent burning *showed them the first picture from above*. The exhaust that I need repaired is in the trunk. I think you will need to re-weld or heat and bend it to get it to fit". That pretty much went through one ear and out the other. The receptionist responded with a "will get it up on the lift and look at it and let you know what we can do before we get started". The shop closes at 6 and by 5:15 they hadn't got to my car so I asked what would happen if they closed before they got to me. The receptionist stated, "we will stay until all customers that have already been signed in have been helped."

By 5:30 I still hadn't gotten an update on my car so I walked outside to the garage and saw them taking my car OFF the lift. I noticed that my Top Speed exhaust was still in the trunk and asked them if they were done. They said "yeah, you had a small exhaust leak but we took care of it for you." So I had to re-explain to them what was going on. One of the service managers came out and said "Oh, we can do it for you but it's not gonna be today. Or we can help you today but it would cost more" I was like wtf... And I told him that the receptionist said that I would be helped today regardless of what time it is. I finally got my price quote of $90 which was perfect and they started working on it. By now it was like 6 and I told them that if they weren't comfortable working on it now, that I would rather come back another day or take it somewhere else. I didn't want them to rush and do a bad job or further damage it. They said they would fix it and they told me to "relax".

I walked back outside and they were getting to work, which is good, but they also had cut my OEM exhaust at the mid pipe, and cut off the hangers as well. They planned on throwing it away because they didn't think I needed it anymore. I went inside to complain about how bad my experience was and I was met with rudeness. The service manager just kept bringing up rebuttles about how I was being picky, how all of their customers never want their oem exhausts back, and blah blah. He even told me, "well you should have told us you didn't want us to throw away your exhaust." I started laughing here. I asked him how anyone who has never been here is supposed to know that they throw away old parts and he didn't know what to say. I asked him if they would have thrown away my air intake if they were replacing it with an aftermarket one and he said yes lol. He eventually said that I was just trying to complain so that I could get a cheaper price, despite the fact that I opened the argument saying "I'm not trying to get a discount". I told them that I read a lot of good reviews about them online, a friend recommended me to them and that I was just very disappointed since I had high expectations. By the end of the argument you could tell that he ran out of things to say. The receptionist that poorly communicated my needs to the mechanics was standing their looking like he was in deep doo-doo. He knew he messed up. After all of this I asked him if he was felt well justified about everything he had said and he said, "yes." After that I just walked outside.

The mechanic ended up welding my oem exhaust back together and using new pipes to re-create the axle back. The mechanic was probably the nicest person there. He was actually the owner of the place! He was very apologetic about what HE did while working on the car. He had no clue about what happened inside and I wanted to leave it that way. He was a real humble guy. Didn't think he deserved to feel my anger.

that sucks... here in sacramento theirs 2 shops I go to for exhaust stuff and one is a little more expensive but the other trys to sell you things you dont really need so it sort of balances out. so I go to the more expensive one (they do every thing from beat up trucks to lambos and Ferraris) and they were complete a** holes. I think it's because I went with my wife and she wears a scarf.

They pretty much refused to work on my car for no reason. I told the guy my exhaust had a really bad drone on the hwy and he said "put it back to stock then". :chuckle: I laughed thinking it was a joke (since they make a living by modifying and fine tunning exhaust systems) and :hater: he looked me straight in the face 100% serious and said fine, we'll put it on the lift and take a look. then he says "put the factory resonator back on". then I say, these don't come with one. he then argues with me that they do (I'm 100% sure the V6 does not) and then I say only the 4 cylinder does. he then says go to the junkyard and buy one then.... while they have resonators on display inside. At that point it was obvious he just didnt want my business.... Price never even came up. I was willing to spend the money.

It just blew my mind the way they were acting. I look white or like a light skinned hispanic guy so I never face discrimination and the 1 time I go with my wife (who's Asian) we get discrimination because she wears a scarf.

That's what I should have done probably. Lesson learned.

That's even worse than my situation... Sorry to hear that man
