Exhaust backfire, popping noises etc...

I've been wondering this for a while..........I'm still learning stuff about cars and all that good stuff, but I've always wondered what causes the Popping noises, and/or Flames to come out of your exhaust?

I noticed a lot of it today cuz I was messing around with another 240sx in traffic a lil while ago.......and I turned down my sound system to listen to the car, and when I got off the gas, the my car kinda gurgled and popped a lil bit. Dunno if any flames came out, but the bumper is a lil blackened now. All I ever remember getting as an explaination was something about Low Back Pressure, but what does this really mean?

could be a few things. you could be experiencing a rich condition from stuff like leaking injectors, and a mafs that's coated slightly in oil or a cts that's got a coating of mineral deposits. Other things that could cause a popping is the absence of the AIV or the reeds of the AIV stuck in the open position.

flames out your exhaust is a bad situation where your cat will for the most part be ruined along with heat fatigue stressing the rest of the metal along the way of the exhaust and possibly burned/melted rear bumper cover.

zero.counter I must agree. sleepsilvia, no having no cat would be a result of running way too rich and probably washing down your cylinder walls with gas and dilluting your oil with fuel as well ie if you're a retard you'd do it.

a retard? wow you guys are quick to jump on the ricer hating band wagon. With my RB20 I got a 5 hp gain with no cat so why dont you stop the hate...secondly if your car is tuned/in good condition it wont shoot flames or leak fuel into your exhaust system.

yes it's a bad idea to purposely shoot flames. Nice way to attract the police to you as well.
