exhasut manifold position

I was wondering if there was a difference between manifolds that place the turbo on top so you can see it or below where you cannot. I was thinking having it on top might just be for show purposes but i wasnt sure. Also has anyone tried making there own exhaust manifold? I know it would take countless hours to do right but im just curious because i knwo i dont really have the skill to do that.
