...........rule number one, always make sure your engine hoist is on level ground... ...........rule number two, NEVER EVER EVER NEVER use anthing but chains to hoist the motor......

the motor was coming out fine, just like the last three i had done. the ropes i was using are 2000lb rated tow lines. the motor came out, got almost high enough to clear the radiator support when... the springiness of the rope combined with the uneven ground caused the motor to flip 180 degrees and land back in the engine bay....

i made sure the chains were good and tight, that sumbitch was going nowhere but out....

also i was impatient and DIDNT wait for my friend to come over to help...

so now ALL of the fluids have made a home on my driveway, and the shifter on the transmission broke. i was replacing it anyway thankfully....at least i didnt get hurt.

the engine is now safly on the ground, upsidown, but on the ground nontheless, and i have learned yet another lesson...chains rule..

flame away...

Rule number three: always have someone underneath the engine when it's lifted out, to catch it incase it falls

No flaming from me, sir. The closest I've ever come to removing a motor was unbolting the engine mounts and jacking up the motor (to remove the oil pan). Glad to hear the were no injuries/major damage. And now I can consider myself that much wiser in that, when the time comes, it'll definitely be chains.

lets put it this way, the first time you try it, your gonna get stuck, and break a lot of ****e, not have all the right tools, and if you ever do get the thing running its going to take 5 times as long as you had planned. the second time it gets a little easier. this was the 5th motor ive disassembled and removed, by myself. took roughly 10hrs from start to finish using nothing but hand tools and taking the time to label and sort all the stuff i removed. the only way your ever going to learn is to do it yourself, unless you have deep pockets and can afford to have all your work done professionally. I do not. and i can see in the future that i will be pulling and installing lots of motors...my advice is to take your time, label EVERYTHING, and make sure you have alternate transportation while your learning what not to do.

oh, and USE CHAINS!!!!!!!!

good advise. when I tear a motor down I stop by the local grocery store for a box of ziplock bags and a magic marker it helps to have a ton of bench space to work with too.

and when your ready to put it back together you can soak all those rusty nasty *** bolts and clips you allready have organized to clean them up a bit. Theres a ton of rust remover chemicals to use. im planning on replacing all the bolts on the timming cover and valve cover and head with stainless steel hex keys. its the little things that make a project turn out good..

lol, that's hilarious.

I've pulled my engine twice just using rope and a hoist and it's gone flawlessly....I tie the rope in between two of the runners on the intake manifold, two on the exhaust manifold, and then lift it from the center of these two ropes with the hook as close to the valve cover as possible. I just pulled the engine yesterday, took me like 4.5 hours...you ALWAYS run into stupid **** that ends up taking a lot longer than it should (like removing the shifter from the transmission and getting at those 2 hidden bolts). I pulled the engine and transmission together....and when i put it back in a few months ago the transmission was attached too...MUCH easier this way IMO.

yeah, i was too lazy to remove the shifter... i got all the bolts out, but then i remembered id need snap ring pliers, and mine were back in my shed, too far away. as i started to pull the motor the transmission seperated on its own nice and easy, but as it fell back in something mustve happened cause now the shifter is bent and doesnt feel like its engaging anything....i assume its busted, but im using a B&M unit when it goes back in...youre right mark when i goes back in, the thranny and motor are going together, sooo much easier.

That's a good question, because on the DE pan, that little "nubbin" is welded on (and not so professional-lookin'), whereas the rest of the pan is just one piece. Looks like an after-thought.

super strong chains=$5 at lowes or home depot

i always bolt my chains onto the motor. i dont like the "wrap around the manifolds" method.

funny stuff btw

as long as no one gets injured, but please always use chains, and bolts, also make sure u have a good guy with stable hands at the crane, we were putting in a motor in my brothers corolla, i told him to drop it steadily as i was guiding it , he tried to sneak a peek past my shoulder while i was guiding the engine in, accidently he pulled the realease too quick, i got a bump on my moved my hands away as i pushed the motor in, i grabbed the crane pump rod and chased him around the block for screwing up, ... he got his hands steadier after he also got a bump on his by the crane rod... be careful and stay clear from the engine.... altho the engine in that way gives me ideas...

you were dumb enough to hoist it on grass.... um... well i'm glad I have a fully equiped garage with a 5ton engine hoist and a compressed air lift that comes right out of the floor... it can take the car upto 12 feet.. I have yet to use any of it... LMAO! but I will!! someday.. glad that I will never have that happen to me
