Excessive steering play - very loose sterring - please help

Hi all, I am hoping you may be able to help me out with a problem I am having with my 08 G35 (no sports) - 12k miles. For months I've thought the steering seemed to have way too much play (would drive in a straight line as you moved the wheel moderately back and forth). This was confirmed for me today when I had a loaner with similar mileage and same model - which had much tighter and more responsive steering.

The SA initially said that there is nothing adjustable on steering, but after driving it himself agreed that it "drove like an oldsmobile". They cant take another look at the car until next week. It would be great to go in armed with any ideas as to the cause or facts from folks who have experienced similar issues.

I should have mentioned the tires are properly inflated and I don't believe alignment is the cause here. Thanks again for any ideas or suggestions.
