Some time back, I mentioned that I was going to post some excerpts/information from a book that I read on oils and oil filters. Here is the first of those installments ...
In these posts, I am not trying to promote the accuracy of the information - the purpose is to show how one expert sees the world. This stuff should be read along with the posts by Fred (palmerwmd).

Likewise, when engines are new, there is always a certain amount of break-in debris being generated. This is true regardless of the precision machining and tight tolerance of engines being manufactured today. Running-in debris contributes to the growing population of abrasive contaminants that can induce more wear. So too, filters get prematurely loaded by break-in debris as well.
Mercedes Benz owners manuals recommend the first oil change at 180 to 600 miles. Common recommendations by industry professionals typically range from 500 to 1500 miles for the first oil change.
The following is my recommendation for those interested in long, reliable engine life. The purpose of the accelerated oil changes is not to replace an aged, degraded motor oil. The quality and condition of the lubricant (additives and base oil) at the first couple of changes will have considerable residual life. The main objective is to facilitate the removal of harmful manufacturing and break-in debris, especially when filters are coarse.
- First oil change: 100 miles after taking possession of the vehicle.
- Second oil change: 1,500 miles after the first oil change.
- Third oil change: 3,000 miles after the second oil change.
- Fourth and beyond: Normal intervals.
