EX35 shut off on the highway

Discussion of Infiniti's amazing (and underrated) sport-luxury crossovers, the EX35 and EX37. For 2014, the EX series will be renamed QX50, in line with Ininfiit's new naming conventions.

Very pissed off, & the title says it all. Driving on the highway yesterday doing 60 mph, the car lost power and then shut itself off. It refused to turn back on. The battery is fine, after about a half hour it would turn on and then as soon as you get it to about 1500rpms it would die again. Infiniti roadside assistance picked the car up but because I was 60 miles from home I was stranded. I'm going to the dealer 1st thing in the morning to raise hell. A '08 with 33k should not have this happen.

Unfortunate, but s*** happens. :frown:

Will like to hear what the cause was.

Fuel system, maybe?

Nothing as of yet. The dealer still has my car. The last phone call they said they think it was a cam shaft but they're still diagnosing it.

Don't even know what to do, dealer had the car the entire week, and every test they said they ran, produced no result as to why this happened, since they had it monday the car has worked fine; so I'm gonna pick up my car that technically is in the same state it was the day it shut off...

I've got hard time understanding how it could be camshaft. If camshaft is bad, it's bad for good, i think, it can cause intermittent problems. Could this be something electric/electronic?
Most intermittent problems come back but let's hope yours doesn't

Wayne,
please let us know how you made out with the fix... my sister in law's vehicle is behaving much the same way (stalls out while accelerating or decelerating - shuts off and restarts immediately thereafter). Her safety is being compromised. The dealer behaving as you'd expect... a lot of head scratching and too cheap to aggressively tackle the issue under warranty.
Thanks for posting!!
Graham.

Sounds like water in the fuel? Slug of water gets to the injectors, causes the stall, then thats the end of the water? This is exactly how my boat acts when it stalls.

All you owners experiencing this intermittent "shut off" while driving need to band together and contact Infiniti/Nissan USA via telephone, letter, email, etc., and demand permanent fix. This seems to be an issue equally as bad as the Toyota brake problem and may lead to death/injury. It's mind boggling that the dealership wouldn't contact Infiniti's engineers for a solution and to report a potential disaster. This engine "shut off" has occurred with a few Q45 (F50) owners too. :tisk:

Why don't you test drive this guy's EX on the highway with your wife, kids, and parents, etc., in the car until the engine shuts off and report back to NICO?

Do you honestly think most companies would risk the the public scrutiny that this would cause if there were an actual widespread problem?

Toyotas brake problem was largely attributed to operator error. Lets bear in mind that that this comes from the same people who have so many floor mats or floor mats in such a position that they impede the operation of the brakes. If you have multiple floor mats running loose on the drivers side of your car shame on you and please remove all but one and secure it for the benefit of my family.
They have unintended acceleration and acceleration despite brake input as part of a software flaw. Nissan has had a failsafe function that will cut the throttle if both pedals are depressed. (try to power brake the car what happens???)

Now that is a great first post....

The dealer is not being cheap. They just are not allowed to replace parts they cannot prove are failed. If the warranty claim gets kicked back than the dealer has to pay the entire claim.

I can tell you guys I have seen the other end of this it gets very frustrating if we cannot actually find a cause but if there are no codes and the problem cannot be duplicated (no matter how severe at the time) there is really only so much we can do. If the problem reproduces itself or triggers and one of the 100+ trouble codes throughout every system of the vehicle it is something that would point the technician in a better direction.
Random loss of power should most likely trigger a fault. A stall should trigger something somewhere. However I have been watching this forum since it started and I have only seen a small handful of similar complaints. The probability of a widespread issue is a not really something I would stress over, life is far to short.
Note- All repair facilities and all technicians are different, in a perfect world the repairs would be more standardized and there would be perfect quality control.

Reviewing the Q45 forum as well and I see there has been a couple more examples of this same problem. Their solution has been a replacement of the Mass Air Flow sensor with positive results. Anyone else had similar success? Graham.
