EX35 Crossbars too close together

Discussion of Infiniti's amazing (and underrated) sport-luxury crossovers, the EX35 and EX37. For 2014, the EX series will be renamed QX50, in line with Ininfiit's new naming conventions.

I would really like to spread the factory crossbars further apart but I dont think it can be done. Anyone have any suggestions? Is it possible to just drill new holes further up? Or do I need to buy a new set of non factory? Basically just want more stability when I carry stuff on the roof.

How much wind noise to you get with these? I tried a pair of Yakima bars and got an annoying whistle once I got over about 40 MPH...I really dont want to install a ferring.

when i put my bars i put my cargo box so the wind noise is really low ( the box stop the wind to whistle). i've tried with just the bars and it whistle a bit but it's really low (you need to shut down the radio to hear the sound)

I have also found the factory cross bars to be a problem. I have put a Inno fork mount bike rack on my cross bars. The rear holes on the bike rack, which there were many, perhaps 20 or more. I had to drill my own hole so I could put the rear clamp on. Non-factory crossbars are an option, but they look, well, non-factory. The other issue I had with the bike rack is that the rear section of the bike rack is now postitioned so far back on the car that I can't open the rear hatch all the way without it hitting the bike rack. I wish the cross bars could be adjusted along a track like some other SUV's. One thing I am going to try is to cut the back of the bike rack to shorten it, or I was thinking of turning it around, it will just look odd driving with my bike facing the wrong way. I will post pics when I get the chance of before and after modification.

I have the answer:
As a bike shop owner I have tried Thule, then Yakima and they all are noisy and do not look good on the EX.
Since, I have tried WHISPBAR they make a cross bar that fits on the factory rails 100% quite, fits both Thule and Yakima racks, looks clean and sporty. Only problem is Whispbar is expensive, I think this brand is out of Australia? I had to pay retail myself, but it made my car driveable again and people compliment me on the way it looks.

Note: The Whispbar website only lists one option for the EX (feet and cross bars) if you search for a 2008 FX the bars for the FX fit PERFECT on the EX35 and you do not need the ugly adaptor feet. I tried to purchase these for my bikeshop and they do not return calls, rumor is they have been purchased by Yakima and will be part of the Yakima product lineup this fall.

Hope this helps

One sweet ride, on top of another sweet ride :chuckle: My Specialized Secteur Elite, mounted to factory roof rails, and after market Yakima cross bars. Location: Orleans, MA

So I ended up removing my factory cross bars and purchasing Yakima rail grabbers and 38" cross bars. I then bought a new Thule fork mount bike rack. After driving this way the wind noise and whistling was really bad. So I purchased the Yakima wind fairing(not pictured here). I don't typically like that look (they look great on a Subaru Outback) but it really works, no more wind noise. I only use this setup seasonly on Cape Cod. So it is on my car from April to October.
The issue with opening my hatch is resolved. I can now fully open it, still close, but does not hit the rear of bike rack. The only issue is how far forward the front cross bar needs to be. It is over the sunroof, but I can still crack open the rear, no interference. I don't use the sunroof often anyway so not a big deal for me.
