EX35 Aftermarket HID Guide

Discussion of Infiniti's amazing (and underrated) sport-luxury crossovers, the EX35 and EX37. For 2014, the EX series will be renamed QX50, in line with Ininfiit's new naming conventions.

How to install Hid kit on non HID EX35 projector bulb.

The easiest way to do it is give yourself a day off and do it the right way. I know one guy here installed the HID kit without removing the front tires and wheel well cover. I think he`s a plastic man!

Here is the right way.

Remove 1 wheel at a time, remove some screws (not sure how many?) that holds the wheel well cover. Remember some clips orientation attachments that hold the wheel well cover closer under the fender. Those are a bit tricky to put back. That is why do 1 wheel at at time, so you can compare those clips you removed vs. the untouched ones on the other side or the other wheel. Also, remember how that wheel well cover tucked in under the fender.

Once you removed everything and have access behind the headlight housing assembly, then remove(twist) that gray cap cover that seals the headlight assembly. Unplug the OEM harness connected to the stock bulb. I think there is a clip that hold the bulb in place. Make sure you wear a glove when installing the hid bulb to prevent oils from your skin getting into the bulb itself. This oil becomes a hotspot on the bulb when lit up causing premature bulb failure.
Those OEM wire harness can be rerouted, so you have some space or hole under the housing assembly where you can reroute the wires from HID (wires that connects to hid filament or bulb) . There is a trick to install the hid bulb or filament. You put the HID bulb using the BIG hole (where gray caps covers it) and the wires that connects to the bulb can be routed down from the holes or small space under the housing assembly, this way there is not much wire sticking out behind the bulb where you won`t be able to close that gray plastic cover that seals the housing assembly. Or another option is to drill a hole in that grey plastic cover and use that rubber boot DDM supplied to seal it.

The OEM headlight wiring harness that used to plug to the original bulb goes to the HID ballast connector. There is one more connector coming from the ballast, and that connects to the HID bulb connector. I think thats about it! it`s really a plug and play. I`ll take a picture of my HID KIT PLACEMENT today. I`ll post it here tonight. Although, you might not see much bec. the kit are all tucked in under the housing assembly.

The time killer for this installation is removing the tires and wheel well cover. I think it`s possible not to remove the wheel and just turn the steering to give more room behind the wheel well. Maybe just remove few clips and screws from the wheel well and kinda make some room or space just to gain access behind the headlight assembly, without having to remove the whole wheel well cover.

Here is the assembled HID kit (DDM electronic Slim ballast KIT 35W)

If you blew up a headlight fuse:
Pic Below: That black fuse box Iocated beside the battery close to the side fender. (larger one) You`ll find headlight fuse in there. The OEM fuse is tiny , but the connector is the same as the ones you`ll find at Autozone , Walmart etc.

Keep us posted on the installation.

Hey AWGD8,

Thanks for the HID information post. Really helps me. I had a quick question. I'm on the DDM Tuning website right now and I'm trying to order the 35W 5000K Kit and it gave me an option to get the "HID Harness" and an "Error Eliminator". What is that? Do I really need to get it?

Thanks!

I was able to install my HIDs without removing the wheels, for the side your working on if you turn the wheels towards you (outward), with a small enough screwdrivers you can pull it off. I have one question for those who have install the HID Kit. I've installed several kits and have enough knowledge now. I noticed one thing particular on the EX when I install the HIDs, for some reason the HID doesn't seem bright as they should be. On the road I compared then to cars with factory HID's (4300-5000k) it seems about the same, but compared to others who factory 35W kits (6000k) mine aren't bright enough especially when hit the ground. Usually its nice a distinctive when you are driving but sometimes at night it seems like my headlights aren't really on (looks really faint) or like I still have halogen bulbs. I know I aligned them properly because when I put it up against the wall I can see the nice clean cutoff line it gives from the projectors. I took it to an empty parking lot to see how it looks on a flat surface and between the front bumper to where the lights actually hit the ground, there seems to be a REALLY big gap as if the headlights are aimed too HIGH (at least 10ft gap) compared to most cars I've seen on the road. Is there any way to adjust them to lower the lights so there is less of a gap from the bumper to where the light actually hit the floor. I imagine the foglights when on cover the gap but it still seems too much to the point where the HIDs dont seem any bright than stock halogen bulbs.

I have different experience. Mine does not cast enough light to the sides. But this is expected since the bow is designed for halogen bulb. I ordered stock headlight and will have tock projector replaced with TSX projector since I want sharpness and a lot of color.

I would look into a projector retrofit as well but not sure how costly it would be especially with these custom automatic stores asking $700 for a simple hid install alone.

That's too much for the labor. Don't know how handyman you are, but it's not difficult for EX35. if you have a reflector, then it takes a lot of work to cut and retrofit a projector. But if you already have projector, it won't be difficult to swap out especialy if it fits almost perfectly like EX35

Sorry for the delayed response.

You don`t need the wire harness and error eliminator. Just get a 35W 5000K kit. I would recommend buying 2 kits if the price is reasonable. Always have a back up kit ready in case one side burns out prematurely.

zarar:

My original DDM 35W kit has a 6000K bulb and It has a bluish tint on it. It is not as bright as my new 35W DDM 5000K. To anyone who is planning on installing an HID kit, I highly recommend to get a 5000K bulb instead of 6000K. 5000K is very bright and very white- I love it!

BTW, If you look at the EXTERIOR LIGHT manual for EX35 , there is a way to adjust the headlight aim by just turning a small screw near the headlight housing....

Thank you for the help, I will order a new set from DDM as soon as I can. Last time I tried ordering from them I couldn't find the slim ballasts on their site, not sure if its still an issue for me, unless I'm not looking properly.
