Why not 10w-40 or 0w-40 though?

Just an FYI...I use the 15/50 mobil 1 in my turbocharged 92 SE-R.The oil pressure is more constant and recovers faster in the heat(its hot out here in the desert:). I know Alot of the SR20 turbo SE-R guys use it as well. just thought id share.

The choice of the hot vicosity is a function of the rod and crank bearing clearances and the engineers desired oil pressure.Whether 20, 30,40, even 50 is the one you want must be determined by detailed precise measurements..........not I think this is right, or what someone says is good...............depends on engine and mileage and abuse.

On USED Q we know we must start at Xw30 and stay with that or move up cautiously. An interesting question for thought is how does synthetic vs conventional behave when the oil is above the 210F measurement point.............my guess is that a 30 weight syn acts more like a 40>50 conventional when above this temperature....[resists thinning out].

Other than extra friction from too thick an oil [gas mileage], doubt you can do any harm with thicker oil in the warm seasons when cold temperature exceeds 60F.Since you are changing the oil every 90 days you have 4 opportunities to vary the mix during the year based on temperature.

Interestingly, several EVO tuners are recommending immediately dumping the factory synthetic fill and refilling with dino oil for break in purposes because they are seeing abnormal bearing wear on cars broken in with synthetic. Whether synthetic oil is really the problem or not, I don't know. After driving a Mitsu product for 6 years, I suspect the oil isn't the real problem. :)

Id start using synthetic, but I dont think at 120k that it'd be wise...... Pointless, I guess........

interesting point wes, was wondering the same thing myself, my 90Q has about the same mileage as yours. most other members here recommend changing to all synthetic. my second oil change is about due, i'm using valvoline durablend 10w/40 now. did an engine cleanup the last oil change with sea-foam for the last 100, gentle miles, and a quart of mobile 1 syn.trans. fluid 15 minutes before the drain. i'm pretty sure my Q had very regular oil changes, it looks very clean in the filler hole. i guess MY question, comes from wes's last post, if a Q has run on dino oil for close to 100k, is a changeover to synthetic worth it, either monetarily or performance/longevity wise???????? i'm trying to do the slow cleanup, change to total synthetic switch. what do the experts have to say?????? is the added expense worth it????? plan on keeping the Q till' i bury her (unless i hit the lottery/inheritance and buy a m45/g35coupe in the next couple years!!!LOL).

I would think that a superior lubricating oil is better for any machine. Vicosity is the variable.
