Rb25det Series II with GT3251E. Has been nothing but problems for me thus far. If I could go back, I would have kept my KA24DE and built it up.

where do I start? Sold my DSM a while ago and had a 240 I bought off a friend. Went looking for a SR20, got fired from my Network support job () so there I am broke with not enough money for a SR. Talk to a friend who gave me the # to a importer. Got my RB20 WAY cheaper than price of a SR20. Then I started working again (If I knew I was goin to be working soon I would have held off and bought the SR20 lol) Got the motor then looked for a mount kit even tho I got the R32 Xmember. Found a Mount kit got lagged on by Some fag named Night7. Got lucky and didn't get jacked by him and got my mounts 2 months later. Called up my friend and we fought the car for a whole night to drop the motor in. I wired it up with the help of Carl H (Thanks mang). Then I started to gather parts, some I had some I had to buy. here is my joy list of money I spent

I have a 120MB video all about my swap. From picking the clip up to taking the car for it's first drive. It's about 20 mins long. I can put it up on limewire if there is interest.

Well it all started when my 2000 Celica GTS was stolen. I decided I was going to go all out on my next car and go back to a 240. So I was on the hunt for a 240 and an SR. In Feb of 2003 I bought a 240 and had just seen Mckinney motor sports RB silvia in person and about 2 weeks later I had my RB240. It has been my daily driver ever since minus my 7 month trip to Iraq. It has had ony two problems since the install, one my fault and the other was an over sight. The one which was my fault is a fried clutch. For those who really drive there RB240 you will know why its fried. The other only problem was the engine would hit what is like the rev limiter when driven and shifted hard which ended up being the TPS set wronge. Other than the love for driving My RB240 thats pretty much my story.

Mine started about a year and a half ago. Live in Omaha and went down to TX to go visit a friend and was planning on getting an S13 while I was down there and that is exactly what I did. Drove my S13 back to NE (10hours) with just me in the car. After about 3 months went by, I found a great deal online, was from RacingHart.com, there was allot of talk that they were the well known and disliked business FlashOptions, but there was no proof and for the price I couldn't resist not to chance it. I was the first buyer from them and they were really hurting for money, so I got two (one for me and one for my friend) RB25DET clips for $1800 shipped for each (not a typo). Got it withing about a month and a half and ended up being two quality motors (mine 20k and my friends having 50k miles).

Once we received them I started my swap. We took some time cleaning and preping it over. Took us about week to get it up and running. After about 2 months of having that I got in a wreck on the interstate caused by some guy having road rage and decided to slam on his breaks making my car slide right in the back of his totaling out my car. After that had happend I was pretty down, but with getting blessed with some good friends and some luck they ended up supprising me with a S13 shell for free. That next week me and my other friend (180GTR) took my RB25 out of my old car and put it in my other car and got it running in 17 hours with just the two of us.

Drove it the rest of the winter into this summer and had a few problems with fuel ( was running at 55psi at the regulator (suppose to be at 43psi) so I ended up getting a Adjustable FPR and we turned it down to 45psi, took it out for some test runs hit the rev limiter (not having a tach) and felt a power loss followed by smoke pooring out my exhuast. Took it back to my friends house and did a compression test on it (110psi in the first five cylinders and then on #6 it was at 25psi) and then followed it with a leak-down....either the rings or ring lands (still have not taken it apart). What caused it to blow is it leaned out, for a few reasons, one being that I had a hole in the o2 housing making the a/f ratio to fluxuate and the main thing is (we hooked up a wide band to my other friends RB25 with the same setup as me) when some one hits rev-limiter on the stock ECU you hit a 17 a/f ratio (crazy lean). Don't ask why Nissan did that to these motors....should take out spark not fuel when hitting the limiter.

Now I am going to tare it apart here in the next two weeks and take a look at it. Hopefully I can just replace the rings, but something is telling me that it is leaning more towards ringlands, if that is the case I will be getting Wiseco Pistons, rings, 1.2 metal head gasket, and APR head studs. Might do a FMIC and turbo upgrade with that.

Alright, if you really want to hear.. everyone gather around and listen to the story of the RB20 Convertible.

It was a dark and scary night in the frozen tundra of Green Bay. I was out driving my 96 240sx. I finally decided that I loved this car, but what I really wanted was an RB engine. Problem is that I just didn't have any money.

So, I put my 240 on sale, and was able to sell it easily enough. I took the money and went shopping. I found a decent high mile convertible with no accidents and no rust. (That's hard to do by the way). The car was in Seattle Washington. I was going to pick it up and bring it home, and someday get an RB. Well, turns out the KA had blown a timing chain and was all jacked up. So, I thought I might as well have an RB installed out there. That way i save the shipping costs and stuff. So, I had DDX do a RB swap along with a 5spd conversion and LSD. I upgraded the fuel pump to a Walbro, did a 300zx fuel filter, power steering, full working cluster, and a bunch of little things.

I flew out to Seattle with a friend hoping to drive it home. When I got there, we found that the car was overheating. They thought it was the water pump, and were unable to fix it soon enough for me to drive it home. So after a couple last minute (VERY EXPENSIVE) plane tickets home.. my RB vert still stood in Seattle.

I tried to sell it. I figured by the time I added up my travel and then new shipping fee's that car was no longer worth it. Unfortunately it's hard to sell a vert in the fall. So it just didn't sell. So i finally found a good shipping option. Cost me $500 to get it shipped home. That was some good luck finally.

So, I've been working on it for the last month in my spare time, and have had it at my mechanic for a bit as well. Turns out the thermostat was functioning, but not well. Opened at 200 instead of 170. Also, the radiator was shot. I guess after sitting without any fluids for so long, it got all rusted and corroded and clogged. Also, with the engine overheating, it blew a couple of the coil packs.

Right now, the car runs and doesn't overheat at all. So that is fixed. I just need to get the coil packs figured out. It might even be the Ignitor chip. But, I think I almost have it running finally.

By the way.. when it's cold, the coils all work, and it is AWESOME.

I am so excited to get it running right. It is going to be fantastic.

That's my story.. hope you liked it.

I bought my RB20 motorset around the middle of January, spent my spare time until April getting the motor ready and the shell cleaned up, then did the swap in May, been running good ever since.

Until , of course, I totalled it 2 weeks ago, but its alright because Im reswapping the motor and will have another 240 shortly.

Starts about 6 month ago, I just got a job making pretty good money for my age (19) so I was going to use all the money I made to get a new car. Ive been in the local racing scene for a while, but I mostly just watched causE Im slow =P. I wanted to get an SW20 because I like drifting and autocrosses, but if I wanted to be at least a little competitive in drag it just wasent going to make the kinda power I wanted. Skylines have been my favorite car since I first heard about em way back when, so Ive looked into getting one before and the prices are nuts. I also liked the 180sx, I always said if I ever got one I would have to have a Skyline engine in it. So, thats how I got started lol. I saved for 4 months and bought my RB25DET front clip from Phase2Motortrend for 3700 shipped, which isnt bad (sucks compared to that 1800 price lol). I started looking for a car and finally just a few weeks ago found a 89 s13 hatch with a blown motor. Bought it for 600 bucks, 50 for him to tow it straight to my door. I just bought my motor mounts and driveshaft from McKinney and they arrived last week, and Im now in the process of removing the blown KA24. Its difficult cause its freezing out here and I dont have room in my garage, but Im still hoping to get it running by the end of January. Maybe you guys can help me out on that =) I got a website showing what Ive done so far : http://www.freewebs.com/r33rb25det

OK, I too can offer a long, storied saga for my own RB26 buildup.

Back in January 2003, I stumbled across this forum, and there was this guy who really seemed to know his stuff. His name was Cameron (Night7Racing). Some of you, if not most of you should recognize this name as being one of the one's responsible for limelighting RB swaps, and also the one who single-handedly ripped off several people, sending a ripple through the RB community. So in early March 2003, I wired $3,500 directly into Cam's checking account so he could source me the "perfect RB26 clip." Mind you, at this time, an RB26 powered S14 hadn't really been accomplished yet here in the States. The plan was to be one of the first, if not the first to have a twin turbo RB26 S14 (a single turbo conversion had been once or twice, but the twins hadn't yet been accomplished). I was told six to eight weeks for my RB26 clip by Cameron.

Three and a half months later, just before Cameron was exposed to the masses as being a crook, I saw that we were going no where with the clip. Many broken pormises later, I demanded a full refund in early June 2003. I sent a good friend over to his house, had him knock on the door, and get me my money back. A few weeks later, he was no where to be found with about $50K of people's money, driving a new 350Z and having just purchased a new house. I'm not completely sure if everyone that sent him money has gotten their product or a refund...

So, I get hooked up with an existing contact at UpSpeed Garage in Goldsboro, NC, and he tells me that he's importing a bunch of RB25's, and a pair of RB26's. I make a deal with him to bring a clip in for me for $3,000, and he would keep several of the parts I wasn't going to use, so that he could re-sell them and I could keep the costs down. In late June 2003, I give him my credit card number for $3,000, payment in full for an RB26DETT clip with 21,200 km. Much to my chagrin, my clip arrives fifteen months and two weeks later in September 2004 (no, I am not kidding). The clip looks decent, and had good leakdown, so we take it home.

The first thing we notice on the engine set is that it has aftermarket belts, and an aftermarket air filter. The water inside the block is rusty, with large metal flakes. Clearly, the odometer has been rolled back and the engine has MUCH more than 21,200 km on it.

So, we tear the entire engine apart, down to a bare metal block, and meticulously clean every square inch of the engine, inside and out. Each piston is cleaned of its carbon buildup. The block is desgreased, and the rusty water/metal flakes are blasted out of the black's cooling chambers with high pressure water. Every part of the engine is dismantled and cleaned. While the engine was apart, we had a JUN crank collar installed, installed a Nismo 1.2mm metal head gasket, and changed all of the seals and gaskets. The engine was re-assembled with several bolt-on performance enhancements (enough to support 550 at the wheels fairly easily). The rear wheel drive conversion was completed with an RB25 sump (heavily modified), and an RB30E box. The engine work has been going on steadily since we received the engine until last week. There are a few loose ends left (see my two previous threads).

The engine will be installed just as soon as I hear from Top Hat Performance for the engine and box mounts. I am to represent Top Hat as a sponsored vehicle to expose their products in an impressive car that I am building up. Top Hat is a local company to me here in N. Georgia. I hope to hear from Mike Sims soon, and hope also to be installed this twin turbo beast into my S14 in the next two weeks. It's ready.

So, that's my story. When I first ordered the clip, it was "impossible" (in the words of forummers) to install an RB26DETT into an S14. I had hoped to be the first. Due to circumstanced WAY out of my control, this swap has been done many times before already. So much for having something exclusive, or being the "first."

For all those that think importing a Japanese engine, getting a good one at that, and rebuilding it, and installing it is easy and cost effective, I pity you.

cool story, i guess i should elaborate/update some on my situation, which is similar to Scott's.

Got my engine from an unamed source for about 3 grand too. Ordered in early october 04, got it by the middle-end of the month. I was told the compression was great, it had aftermarket turbos, complete wiring harness, and lastly that the valve cover was pink.

Motorset came in on a pallet w/ the 25 trans already bolted up to it. On first glance, it looked eh. Some connectors were crushed, aftermarket turbos were looking a little worn, some parts were slightly rusted. The valve covers and ornament, however, were definitely pink.

Next step was the leakdown test. Got a leakdown tester, and pulled out my totally blackened, worn plugs. Everything was great except for cylinder 2, which was leaking around 30%. Long story short, I call the guy and his "warranty" covers startup, so no dice.

Decided I would tear it down myself, and take it piece by piece to the machine shop. So thats where I am now. Wiring harness pretty much traced out- still needs soldering repairs. Bare block sitting on my engine stand. All parts bagged and tagged strewn around my garage.

Ready for the machine shop... I think I found one not too far away.

All of this, and still no car haha. And to those "thinking" about the swap... as Scott put it, definitely not without its shortcomings. However, i still think it will be really cool once its done, and there are still only a handful of ppl who have successfully done it. Definitely wont be the first, but at least one of the few (hopefully).

My story is: 500+ hours and it still does not run.

Hopefully one day I can expand this story if the situation changes.
