OK, I too can offer a long, storied saga for my own RB26 buildup.
Back in January 2003, I stumbled across this forum, and there was this guy who really seemed to know his stuff. His name was Cameron (Night7Racing). Some of you, if not most of you should recognize this name as being one of the one's responsible for limelighting RB swaps, and also the one who single-handedly ripped off several people, sending a ripple through the RB community. So in early March 2003, I wired $3,500 directly into Cam's checking account so he could source me the "perfect RB26 clip." Mind you, at this time, an RB26 powered S14 hadn't really been accomplished yet here in the States. The plan was to be one of the first, if not the first to have a twin turbo RB26 S14 (a single turbo conversion had been once or twice, but the twins hadn't yet been accomplished). I was told six to eight weeks for my RB26 clip by Cameron.
Three and a half months later, just before Cameron was exposed to the masses as being a crook, I saw that we were going no where with the clip. Many broken pormises later, I demanded a full refund in early June 2003. I sent a good friend over to his house, had him knock on the door, and get me my money back. A few weeks later, he was no where to be found with about $50K of people's money, driving a new 350Z and having just purchased a new house. I'm not completely sure if everyone that sent him money has gotten their product or a refund...
So, I get hooked up with an existing contact at UpSpeed Garage in Goldsboro, NC, and he tells me that he's importing a bunch of RB25's, and a pair of RB26's. I make a deal with him to bring a clip in for me for $3,000, and he would keep several of the parts I wasn't going to use, so that he could re-sell them and I could keep the costs down. In late June 2003, I give him my credit card number for $3,000, payment in full for an RB26DETT clip with 21,200 km. Much to my chagrin, my clip arrives fifteen months and two weeks later in September 2004 (no, I am not kidding). The clip looks decent, and had good leakdown, so we take it home.
The first thing we notice on the engine set is that it has aftermarket belts, and an aftermarket air filter. The water inside the block is rusty, with large metal flakes. Clearly, the odometer has been rolled back and the engine has MUCH more than 21,200 km on it.
So, we tear the entire engine apart, down to a bare metal block, and meticulously clean every square inch of the engine, inside and out. Each piston is cleaned of its carbon buildup. The block is desgreased, and the rusty water/metal flakes are blasted out of the black's cooling chambers with high pressure water. Every part of the engine is dismantled and cleaned. While the engine was apart, we had a JUN crank collar installed, installed a Nismo 1.2mm metal head gasket, and changed all of the seals and gaskets. The engine was re-assembled with several bolt-on performance enhancements (enough to support 550 at the wheels fairly easily). The rear wheel drive conversion was completed with an RB25 sump (heavily modified), and an RB30E box. The engine work has been going on steadily since we received the engine until last week. There are a few loose ends left (see my two previous threads).
The engine will be installed just as soon as I hear from Top Hat Performance for the engine and box mounts. I am to represent Top Hat as a sponsored vehicle to expose their products in an impressive car that I am building up. Top Hat is a local company to me here in N. Georgia. I hope to hear from Mike Sims soon, and hope also to be installed this twin turbo beast into my S14 in the next two weeks. It's ready.
So, that's my story. When I first ordered the clip, it was "impossible" (in the words of forummers) to install an RB26DETT into an S14. I had hoped to be the first. Due to circumstanced WAY out of my control, this swap has been done many times before already. So much for having something exclusive, or being the "first."
For all those that think importing a Japanese engine, getting a good one at that, and rebuilding it, and installing it is easy and cost effective, I pity you.
