ok, when you guys say "rebuild" do you mean piston rings, bearings, etc. or juthe gaskets and such like everybody who buys a "JDM" engine should do?

I have to think the majority that are slapped into S13s(specially the ones my BF and I help out with locally) dont even get new oil put in them....... let along a compression check, leak down, new gaskets, WP, belts, and the basics.

I read floats write up 5-8 times before begining my swap........ I def cut corners in retro spec I shouldnt(IC piping and w/p and timing belt looked close to new and functions properly), but..... now its been 2 years down the road and my compression is still solid.

rings, bearings, probably some machine work, gaskets, cam and crank seals, water pump, oil pump, turbo, fpr, have the injectors cleaned, every rubber line, etc.

But if youve never seen an assembled CA (like me) and its missing half the parts (like mine) expect to cry alot and spend 6-8 months of wrenching on it. I occasionally wonder why I didnt replace my blown KA with another one, but when I think about the fact that I've personally seen and fondled every part of my motor and how intimate our relationship has become with the constant bonding moments, I wouldnt have it any other way. Also its not an SR and it sounds better than one so its impossible to resist.
see I see it the other way around......... finding parts for this and that is a ***** and 1/2 and always having a matching set of tires will all atleast wear the same. better than going and buying 4 different 10 dollar and having the car pull to the side with more tred.

finding an engine that is disassembled or has a blown HG but all there is much better IMHO.

haha Dee you can blow me, I was just saying in reference to cars in Japan being beat and the mileage never being the standard "50k" miles that I wonder about the JDM B16 I just bought and how much abuse its really been through...

Great read, and very true.

I'm relatively new to the CA scene, especially compared to Dee, Ryan, TMS and the lot, but I'm definately in love! I got my CA because it only seemed like the logical swap in my case (CA16DE KN13 Pulsar). I did a whole lot of research about the swap from the start then finally bought my motor. While I must admit, I didn't do a full rebuild, everything seemed to be in respectable condition after inspection. She's run nice and strong since the first time I lit her up! True, I may abuse her a little from time to time, she stays stong and a little TLC later she's back to her chipper old self.

I completely agree with what you said about people buying them "just to be cool or different" and with what you said about people who just wind up the boost on a 20 year old motor. I wouldn't go so far as to tell people don't buy them, I just think there should be far more consideration put into the purchase.

i didn't replace gaskets, clutch, water pump, or timing belt. i figured compression was pretty good based on my vacuum gauge readings. i really haven't run my car at all yet, besides two or three good times, so its still basically in "swap" form. i think when im putting on my exhuast manifold and such i'll pull the oil pan just to take a look at everything underneath. but im really confident in my motor as it had original nissan alt and p/s belts and they are pretty much new. w/p and timing belt will get changed this summer most likely.

well i did, i did say i did it to be different, that didnt mean ( and im not accusing of u assuming so) that i didnt do my own research on it b4 hand, though i stil lhave few questions un answered, specially living in the states were the motor wasnt offered like other countries, and in a city that is overrun my by 2 liters. though i do find it funny that, i have pushed my baby to 10 pounds on 101 and had fun at the track, and yet to cause any harm (checked compression accross the board 2 weeks ago... most of my friends with Sr's are either rebuilding, needing a rebuild, or nutting over sr's, i give it its due, but most of them do as u say, ghetto rig a way to turn boost up and pop there ish within months. I on the other hand, baby my motor, i dont beat on it daily, i cruise most of the time, and keep bost stock and hardly ever reach the max 8psi its on...

Yeah, sorry if that came across wrong. It was aimed more at the "hey guys, let's jump on the band waggon" kids...

HA HA yeah no kidding. 4AGE, 8 port JDM CA, two 4 port CA's, an FJ20, my wife's rebuilt turbo charged D16, a D16ZC, and a B18 all sitting in my garage right now and not one of them in a car

I guess we are brothers

To be fair, some of us swap in CAs because they fit better into the project they're planning. That's why I chose one for my MG. If you think finding parts for a 20-year-old Nissan engine is hard, try finding parts for a 47-year-old British sportscar from a company that went out of business almost thirty years ago. You just got to find the right people and everything will be fine.

Here's my car if anyone's curious.

I get a lot of Hugh Grant references but I don't see it. Recently people tell me I am basically a young Dr. House without the cane. I actually see that resemblance and it is downright creepy how much we look alike and how much that character acts like I do.

I had some girls tell me I looked like Dr. House too, I was like WTF broad, I'm 23! I would take it as a complement if I was 50, maybe, but not now. Come on!

Side note, I asked her if she and her friend wanted to see my cane. It did not work as planned. I went home alone that night, haha!
