is it good to drift without powersteering? i have a 90 240sx, planning an SR swap, but i dont have the money to get an aftermarket powersteering line, and of course looking for a beat up 1991-94 240sx is hard in the central valley. so i thought maybe i'll just drive without powersteering for a while. Share with me your opinons.

91+ factory powersteering lines bolt right up. You don't need a custom one.

I don't know about driving a 240 without power steering but I did drive a 97 neon without power steering for about 2 months, 50 miles a day. It wasn't all that hard, especially when you get used to it. The only things that are problems are driving in traffic and parking. Otherwise, I had fun driving without it, I felt like there was more feedback from the road. I also felt a VERY, EXTREMELY small increase in power. Some things to consider: the neon was at least 200-300 pounds lighter than a 240 but a neon is more front heavy then a 240 so I cannot say if turning a 240 would be easier, harder, or the same as turning a neon. As far as drifting goes, I would think that drifting without PS would be alot harder since it requires quick steering input. However this is only my best guess.

I bet if you had some really beefy, sticky tires, it would suck even more at low speeds.

am thinkin of takin out my ps too, my brothers used to drive this mazda 323 without a ps(from factory, lol, low ~90) and they said it wasn't that hard because as long as you are rolling(5+mph i guess), the steering wouldn't be as hard as say stand still.

it could be better for drifting because you can feel the road better.

I like my power steering especially for drifting. I'm also lazy and still have A/C and I attend drift events regularly.

Drifting without powersteering is very dumb. Only do it if you have no other options. With no powersteering, the wheel is pretty hard to manuver while drifting. Im not saying its impossible, but I was drifting my friends SR'd coupe with no PS and I could barely do anything right. Even Mike Peters, Bubba Drift, couldnt pull anything off, and he used to autox a civic for 2yr without PS

sounds like a work out just to drift.. hey you might get buff after the experience? I know its tuff for slow speeds (friend has an EG w/o PS)and fine for high speeds (but not a lot of turning needed) but hmm... high speeds with countersteering and no PS... never thought of that...

wouldnt the steering wheel snap back quicker with no ps? like when you let go of the wheel? Seems like it would be more responsive.

I drift and drive in the touge with no power steering... I actually like it. My PS pump is leaking so I have to constantly refill it. I plan on re-routing the cables when I get the new one in so I can drive without it. Much more responsive and heavier steering feel. Just like I like it... It feels like the Lancia Delta Integrale I learned to rally in.

Just make sure when the wheel snaps back it doesn't snap your wrist. My power steering line is trashed in my 89 hatch. I've onyl driven out i my field and never reaaly had trouble.Only trying to park.Which wasn't that hard either. Just got to be able to grip the wheel and turn it. Afte rbaotu 2 weeks you'd be use to it. I assume drifitn would be liek when I was in the field due to sliding. So on the track it shouldn't be too hard. However for on the street on tight turns and may not be best.

My '84 RX-7 didn't have power steering and I loved it for at-the-limilt handling. I could feel everything through the steering wheel. I felt more comfortable pushing that car than my 240SX which has more suspension work.

I guess if you can get a manual rack more power to you. I don't think a 240 was ever made with a manual rack.
