The '91 Saab is now 19 years old. The Cadillac is 18. Its hard to believe because I drive them daily. I don't baby them or treat them like classics or anything. They get driven thoroughly and subjected to all seasons. In high school, a 20 year old car I could afford would have been something like a Datsun Sunny or Sentra.Something desirable from the early 80s might have been a Z car, but by 2000 those were already rusted out and in need of heavy restoration work. By then, the Z was already considered a classic.

My dad bought one of these in the early 90s, and despite being only 15 years old it looked like it was 50:

I look at the 89-94 Maxima and it doesn't look old or anachronistic at all. Same goes for the Jeep Cherokee. Most of these new cars with tall doors, small windows, and cat-eye headlights swept up to the a-pillar don't look "current" to me at all, maybe because I choose not to accept them for being overwrought and gimmicky. To me they're styling experiments.

So it seems my preference for automotive styling is set in stone from 1988-2004.

Cool story bro.

Most of our cars are old, 5 of them are older than me. While they are considered classics, we drive them all. We do not have any furniture in the garage.

+1. My Z32 was designed in 1989, and the looks of it still give modern cars a run for their money. Timeless look to it, IMO.

Also, I test drove an '85 Z31 the other day, and I was honestly impressed by it. I would have been impressed with it had it been offered with all the features it had back then in a car off the showroom floor TODAY.

I share the same feelings as you about my favorite years when cars were made .

Mine is 17 years old, and I've boosted it and daily drive it. It's broken on me a few times too.I still don't think if it as that old though, doesn't make weird rattling noises or squeak.

My car is old too. Not by year, but by mileage. Already 12,000miles and I got her in Nov. 09 with 75miles on the dial(Driven from San Jose to Antioch for pick up.).

I am getting to be old and I must say my taste ranges from the 70's to the 90's. Most cars from the last 10 years has been bloated and goofy looking to me. I still think the 3rd gen Altima is a pretty awful looking car but then again Nissan isn't looking to me as a target audience either.

I completely agree.

Not only is my Maxima (my first car) 18 years old, it also has 228,000 miles on it.

You wouldn't believe the looks I get when I tell people that.

I love older cars. Just LOVE them.

I completely agree.

if you count manufactured dates I've gota 22 year old buick and a 19 year old nissan.

Both have aged incredibly well IMO

My styling tastes also skew in the 10-20 year old cars. Or you could look at it as pre-ODB2

My old Max is old enough to drive itself. It's still nicer than many new cars...just gutless. The styling has aged amazingly well, and the interior is such an effective blend of classy and functional that even it stands up to many new cars.

I really don't like modern styling of most cars. To me, cars like BMWs and Mercedes have lost a lot of their classic lines. You can see styling cues of the 70s BMW 2002 in the 95-02 7 series. New BMWs? No real styling heritage.

As I like to to tell my wife, it's not the years but the mileage...

The one vehicle that surprises me in my fleet is my Toyota (sorry Jesda) Bought it new 13 years/200K ago, it still looks/runs well.

May 17, 1993, so its 17 years old with 167,000. I can't wait to hit 200,000. Although, thanks to the previous owner, the problems keep on coming, at least theyre not big problems.

However, a car from 1999 or even 2000 is still "new" to me. When I try to understand that a 2000 Dodge Dakota is 10 years old, my head asplodes.

I have had cars older than my current one...... but I can't fully believe it's 20 years old when I look at it....

I know.... crappy pics..... I promise to take better ones once I have it registered, and give it a decent wash/polish.

It looks similar to this one......

^^Yep, this.

I will never be able to look at mid-90's cars and say "wow, that looks old". That's just what a car looks like to me, all the newer stuff looks like spaceships.

I happen to LIKE some of the spaceships, but I won't ever get "used" to them in any meaningful way. My perception is just locked roundabout 1999.

Really, the 70s and now are the only periods I DON'T like as far as automotive styling. 20s rock, 30s rock, 40s ROCK, 50s rock, 60s are king, 80s were good, 90s rocked, now sucks.

I really think the styling depends on where the car came from..

80s and early 90s were the best for german cars (probably more the 80s), 90s was the best for japanese cars, anything american in the early 90s or 80s sucked...

I will say many of the 90s Japanese cars (nissan or not) were pretty timeless designs.. If they have good paint, they still look good next to brand new cars..

the 80's were gold the Japs and Italians...

I think the early part of the 90's where dominated by germany. Look at the 3 series, about anything Mercedes made, the Porsches, the VW's...Audis really came around to be good looking cars in the mid 90's.

some of the US cars from the 80's and 90's still look passable for new.

the MN12 Thunderbirds for example...throw a couple creases in the body and some bubbly headlights on this and you have a hit.

yes, I miss mine.
