About a year ago I addressed the charcoal that was coursing through my EVAP lines that led the solenoid, and I replaced the unit and Valve with a junkyard find. I removed the charcoal in the lines with a gas station tire pump, going from both ends (front to back and vice-versa).
I'm not currently having problems, but I'm focused on preventative maintenance. Is there a way to clean the valve to bring it back to top shape? Or, if I'm replacing parts for a second life on my car should I just replace it with a new one (assuming it is aged)? Or, should I keep it out of sight/out of mind til it fails and throws a code?
Thank you.

I really don't think that's a PM sort of thing so I wouldn't mess with it.

Is it one of those parts that either works or doesn't, and if it doesn't work the car would tell/show me? For the future what would symptoms be of pending failure?

That's about right. It either works or it doesn't and if it doesn't, an EVAP system trouble code should get flagged.

Md is absolutely right. There's nothing wrong with prevention on parts that wear out routinely, but the one thing most likely to fail in your evap system -- a filled-up canister -- would be a complete PITA to remove and weigh routinely. "Exploding" evaps like you experienced are relatively rare, and the ECM will warn you about anything else that's failing. For the most part, evap systems are meant to be invisible and you can leave them that way.
