I'm searching for anyone who has had experience fixing a leak or faulty valve/canister, that may throw a P0400 code (evaporative emission system)
Thanks for a reply!

Also test your gas cap, as I've seen that pretty often as well.

Thanks Ace, I have heard of that being a possible cause too… Not sure what kid of "test" to perform. There's a whoosh of [vapor] when I loosen it- expected if the tank is near empty, but this happens even if it has as much as a quarter tank

I have 59 days to study a bit more & get it fixed. That gives me time to not have to be laying in a snow bank- I hope!!
Hoses, valves, electrical connections, pressure sensor, etc. I'll at least know more and maybe save a few ducats by checking some things myself first.

epmd? seriously, did we travel back to the mid 90's?

i fixed an evap leak on my explorer with a $5 gas cap. it's only five "ducats", and if it's original, probably prone to failure sooner, rather than later.

^Ditto to what everyone said above. Your EVAP issues are very likely due to a faulty gas cap. Just to grab a new one and put it on, then reset your codes. I'm willing to bet it'll solve your problem.

Thanks for the reply 'nuts…There must be something wrong with me  but if I could go back to the mid 90's & stay there I prly would.
Ok- I looked at the gas cap carefully of course there's no apparent damage, but you're right it's a cheap fix. Taking off the evap valve on the canister and inspecting all the connections, hoses + the action of the valve itself, etc. is also easy - except I don't have a garage to do it in unless I drive 25 miles thru the storm to my Bro's place. Will keep ya posted.

Dear Dr. Kompression, I would love to know how to reset the CEL /codes- is a device required, like the plug in thingy they use to read the codes? I had a VW jetta once where there was actually a reset button behind the glove box. It just couldn't be that simple.

Actron Electronics makes the plug in device for your 1996 OB2 (ON board diagnostics)
You can read the code and then erase it; but write it down and try to fix
the problem on some items

Most larger chain auto parts stores such as Advance Auto Parts, Kragen, and Autozone should have a code scanner and you should be able to get them to clear your codes free of charge. You can pick up a basic OBD II code scanner in the future though for around $50 or less sometimes so save you a trip next time. They are quite handy to have.

You also may just be able to unhook your battery for an hour or so and be able to clear the codes, but it doesn't always work.

Wow, Great info - Thanks guys! I did replace the Gas Cap for starters- will try to "reset" the codes then go from there. This process of solving problems for the DIY mechanic is great… Someone else down the road may find what I'm learning helpful.
KUDOS to y'all!
