Evap emissions system 1996 Maxi - code P0440

Howdy! just signed up to hopefully get info & help. Presently I failed an emission test and the code was P0440 Evap Emission system.
got a few hints from a general google search re; a valve on the evap canister up behind the rear drivers side wheel being the likely trouble.
Anyone have any sage advice or hard earned knowledge to share. I love this car - it's the most reliable, best running vehicle I've ever owned.
