Wanted to start this thread as have talked with many people here with vehicles running "lousy" all the sudden and lately. SO I got on the snoop.

Here in Arizona and the west and across US 10% Ethanol has been added, 'blended' in fuel. Of course nothing was said of this but Shell started advertising "With Nitrogen" which is corn.....ethanol, in the last month plus. There are little 10% Ethanol signs on some of the pumps if you look.A little research say that as of about 6-7 weeks ago this became the norm and is part of some EPA hussle, scam, etc... I WILL stay out of politics here.

SO.. as best I can tell with this stuff mileage goes down 20 to 30 percent. If 20mpg now 16 becomes the norm as people are reporting loosing on average 4mpg. Easy math says if twenty gallon tank it takes 3 more gallons of "gas' to get back mpg per tank. At approx $3.00 per gallon there it is; Around $9.00 US more to travel same distance as before. I will do math if someone would like.

But here is the kicker for us that love these Nismo's. This stuff is ruining engines with major impurities and deposits; plugs, injectors, seals, lines and on and on. It lacks the ability to create Hp and therefore the need for more, and less mileage. Basically it doesn't compress, ignite, and combust as normal petroleum fuel does. Found to burn hotter and all kinds of stuff is going on. Now I don't pretend to have all the tech data at hand for this 90/10 blend ethanol. I have read it all and worked in the petro industry for many years and know its crap for our rides.

So what is the fix?

Flex fuel vehicles are out there but what will they turn out to be and do? GM?No thanks!

I hope someone or some company will have a retro for this or a fix for us and all standard engines SOON. This stuff will not go away and was waning in scope and production until the great hand out , sorry, stimulus of this year.

But here is the good news, supposedly. Some say that PREMIUM, 91 OCTANE US, is not affected or as affected by percentage of additive.. I always have used premium and only Chevron and don't know, as I just put 480 miles on mine before I got onto this and thought mpg was hinky but didn't actually check.

Can still find NON ethanol fuel I hear but not in some states which I will avoid anyway.

I wrote Chevron and Shell but haven't heard anything back and am not holding my breathe.

Thanks

You can't get any gas around northeast florida without 10% ethanol. It's everywhere and I hate it. I definitely noticed a detrimental difference when they switched to it. Also every now and then there will be something like soot gathered around my gas cap door, almost looks like mold or exhuast or something. And it's happened ever since they started using ethanol. So every once in a while I'll have to get a wet rag and wipe it off. It's not just my truck. I've seen it on many vehicles. But as you heard, 91 octane (in my experiences) hasn't been as bad.

In Canada, the chains Mohawk and Husky both advertise using ethanol as if it were some kind of godsend. So sad it's funny... it's like a restaurant advertising "eat here and we'll kick you in the balls, yay!" I've only filled up there a handful of times, and every single time I get terrible gas mileage, with all the vehicles I've driven.

http://oee.nrcan.gc.ca/Publica...s.cfm claims that gas with 10% ethanol increases fuel consumption by "about 2-3 percent", but in my experiences 10% ethanol = 10% increase in fuel consumption.

I believe winter blends in other gas stations around here (Shell, Esso, Petro Canada, etc) use ethanol as a gas antifreeze in their winter blends, and I get a similar result with my gas mileage all winter... about 10% more fuel used. This drop in fuel economy is in both regular and premium gas.

They claim it's a "green alternative", but if it's increasing fuel usage by 10% then it doesn't seem that green to me.

I don't see how ethanol could be used as an anti-freeze, as it is an alcohol and attracts water.

Scientists also proved that Ethanol is MORE harmful to the environment once burned off, because it creates more CO2. Also as far as car oil i went and bought the Valvoline MAX Life oil that guarantees for 300,000 miles and I got at least 25% better gas mileage per tank. From my house to college took a whole tank of gas before I used Valvoline and now its only 3/4 tank for the trip. The trip is 247 miles by the way.
