a new guy, of course.

i'd just like to know what is causing this rattling noise that i get from my05 3.5 SE. Everytime i drive and drive it on 2000 rpm, the noise comes out and only on 2000 rpm.

it sounds like a metal rod hitting something.

if i can get any answers to this, it would be great.

you dog your car if you do sounds like you an engine nock witch is not good. try this do your oil change and try thicker oil 20 50 the noise might go away. see once oil heats up it becomes like water and ends up not being able to surculate to the top. you can also try lucas that might work also.

My car is due for an oil change too, I was using 10w30. So I'll go ahead an change that and see if the noise goes away.

By the way, I don't know much about cars. What is lucas?

if you go into autozone just ask them for it. its a oil additive that thickens the oil so it can cerculate better. oh and if its not that with the oil thing it can be your lifters if it is dont worry too much about that nissans are known for that i guiss there automatic or something and after awhile they tend to loosen up a little.

No, do not change the oil thickness. The bearing tolerances are designed for a specific weight and unless you have high miles, a thicker oil is not going to help. Let us know if changing the oil helped to quiet the noise. And lifter noise is mostly noticeable at idle or slightly above, so it probalby is not that.

What is the frequency of the noise? Is it more of a buzzing, hollow tinny sound? Or is it an acute tick, tick, tick that speeds up as the motor rpm speeds up?

sorry i took long to reply back.

i went ahead and changed the oil thickness from 10w 30 to 20w 50 and i still hear the rattling noise.

whenever i drive around 2000 rpm or sometimes whenever i accelerate you start hearing the noise, it is loud and sounds really bad.

Any more description on the sound? I'm wondering if it isn't a heat shield on the exhaust. Typically those have a resonance that they will make a loud buzzing noise at.
