I noticed you are in the Chicago area. I just bought a 93 J30t and need to have some belt work done to it. I was wondering if you knew any reputable mechanics in the area. It sounds like you are pretty inclined, maybe you could help. I would really appreciate it.

I am also from the Chicago area. Where are you in Chicago?

Sorry, I dont think I can recommend you to a reputable shop. I'm sure Eswift would.

sorry, i replied to you on the other post you said that on:

here is what i said:

I cant really reccommend any independent shops, and I really wish I knew of a good one around that deals with nissans and infinitis.

The one my family has been using for all out cars has really been screwing us over, so I have resorted to doing as much of our maint. as possible myself...cant recommend that place.

Its hard times for a lot of these shops, as far as I can tell.

Dealers are even worse, dont get me started with those, unbelievable...

Infiniti of Lisle has never done me wrong, but Im sure you know how pricey it is.

It is getting cold, but if you have your own garage and basic tools, I would recommend you to change or adjust your own accessory belts, if that is the case.

If it is a timing belt issue, thats another case...

There may be other good shops out there, but i would stick to an infiniti dealership, or someone that knows the VG.

Ultimate Z is a shop that does 300zx's, so they might be able to help you out, or point you in the right direction.

GOOO CUBS!!!!!

About U-Z they are also very pricey. I went to Lisle for motors for my driver-rear window and they wanted like 400 bucks, it was crazy. Long story short, a little jury-rig did the ole job. I live right by Elgin which is like due West of Chicago and I havent found many good Nissan/Infiniti shops around here....

CUBS WIN!!

but seriously, I think the best way is to "know a guy" with a shop, that way you can use the lift on late nights or weekends...or even if you have them do it, you hopefully wont get screwed.

I think q45tech had the advice quite a while back, to get to know your mechanic well...buy him a case of beer every once and a while, and invite him to family outings or whatever....of course this was partially in jest, but not completely, because this would more than pay for itself in one small hour long repair.

OneFast, how did you get the 180rwhp number? did you run it on a dyno?

if so, where at, and can you recommend it?

I am looking for a place that has wideband o2, for a reasonable price.

all i have found is this 4wd subaru/vw/audi dyno place in naperville that is really high quality, just really expensive.

(i need the wideband because I am planning on alternative engine management and I need that info for tuning purposes)

thanks

Eswift,

Thanks for your imput. I was quoted $400 to do the timing and 3 accessory belts and $250 for a new starter parts and labor. You think that is a pretty good deal? Let me know and thanks for your help.

GO CUBS!

depends...does their quote for doing the timing belt include everything else that needs to be done at the same time?

as far as the starter goes, yeah it should take about an hour, and that would be about the price with a genuine oem part.

I'm not sure what you mean by everything else? They are replacing the timing and 3 accessory belts. What else would have to be done?

any time you replace the timing belt you will definitley want to replace the water pump. (water pump is the bulk of part cost, which is why i ask what is included)

with 93 J30s the belt is replaced every 60k,

94.5 J30s it is every 105k. (although all replacement belts are of the 105k type - kevlar reinforced, prevents against stretch)

at the 105k interval, there is a whole host of things that needs to be done, either search on here or check it out in your owners or service manual.

Yeah, I'm having him do the water pump and thermastat as well. Hopefully that will do it. I'm gonna flush the trans and rear diff, then I hope I'll be good past 100k. Anything else you can think of?

Hey Eswift, I went to this shop called Garage Kwai, they are an import shop that mostly specialize in Honda. They DO work on Nissan 240s alot though. Anyways, it cost me 75 bucks for 3 runs, but this was the first like week they got the dyno. Plus they ran my car like 10 times cuz I was the first automatic car they put on it. I know nothing about that wideband stuff, my friend just dragged me there and told me to throw it on.

As far as how i got the 180whp well so far I just brushed on the basic crap:

Jim Wolf POP ChargerUnorthodox Racing PulleysA custom Y-pipe exhaust (that needs alot of work)Jim Wolf ECU (slightly tuned)

I wanted headers but they are a ***** to install and I need to go an redo my whole exhaust someday soon anyways so I'm waiting for that. My cats are messed up, all the heatsheilds are loose, the pipe from the manifold to the cats is rusted and rattles like hell. But thats a different story alltogether.

I'm putting it back on the dyno again as soon as I rebuild the engine this winter. I get out of school on Nov 26 all the way till Jan 6, so I won't be doing any driving (carpool for work). But not only am I doing that, I'm flusing the trans, rear end, cleaning the fuel system, and if that all goes to plan then I'll start on the exhaust. Hopefulley with the rebuild, cleaning, and new exhaust work I can put this J past 200whp. I can email you the dyno chart if you wanna see it, I just don't know how to resize pictures to put em on this site...

sounds like a pretty decent setup youve got....

i would be interested in seeing the chart, especially to see how it compares to a 300zx in terms of torque

if you could email it to me, that would be great....
